CITY OF LONG BEACH WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 11, 2021 SENIOR CITIZEN ADVISORY TELECONFERENCE, 9:00 AM COMMISSION MINUTES Naida Tushnet, Chair Phyllis Schmidt, Commissioner Michele Valencia, Vice Chair William Smith, Commissioner Don Darnauer, Commissioner Robert Finney, Commissioner Flora Easter, Commissioner TELECONFERENCE TELECONFERENCE ROLL CALL At 9:04 am, Commissioner Valencia, called the meeting to order. Commissioners Don Darnauer, Flora Easter, Robert Finney, Phyllis Schmidt, Present: William Smith and Michele Valencia Commissioners Naida Tushnet Excused: PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE Commissioner Finney led the Pledge of Allegiance. READING OF MISSION STATEMENT Commissioner Schmidt read the mission statement. Advocate for new thinking and science on aging for the culturally diverse population of Older adults in Long Beach and broaden knowledge in the areas of education, safety, housing, health, transportation, technology and the quality of life. GUEST SPEAKER Mr. Charles Song with the Maye Center, reported on the Cambodian elders in Long Beach. He was also very interested in working with the Long Beach Senior Citizen Advisory Commission. Motion was made by Commissioner Darnauer, seconded by Commissioner Easter, to approve the July 14,2021 minutes. The motion was carried by the following vote: Yes: 6 - Don Darnauer, Flora Easter, Robert Finney, Phyllis Schmidt, William Smith and Michele Valencia Absent: 1 - Naida Tushnet STAFF REPORT Recreation Superintendent, Ted Stevens updated the commission on the masks/ Health orders that have taken place. He also announced that Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine are increasing their programming. STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS A. Community Relations - Commissioners Finney and Smith - NONE. B. Crime Prevention and Safety - Commissioners Valencia and Easter- NONE C. Health - Commissioners Valencia and Easter - NONE D. Housing - Commissioners Tushnet, Darnauer and Schmidt- NONE E. Legislation - Commissioners Tushnet and Valencia- NONE F. Technology - Commissioners Finney and Schmidt- NONE G. Transportation - Commissioners Darnauer and Smith - NONE UNFINISHED BUSINESS Motion to postpone the land acknowledgement discussion to the September 8, 2021 Long Beach Senior Citizen Advisory Commission meeting so Mr. Louis Robles, Jr can review. Motion was made by Commissioner Darnauer, seconded by Commissioner Finney, to postpone until the next meeting on September 8, 2021. The motion was carried by the following vote: Yes: 6 - Don Darnauer, Flora Easter, Robert Finney, Phyllis Schmidt, William Smith and Michele Valencia Absent: 1 - Naida Tushnet Page 2 of 3 CITY OF LONG BEACH WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 11, 2021 SENIOR CITIZEN ADVISORY TELECONFERENCE, 9:00 AM COMMISSION MINUTES NEW BUSINESS Motion passed for the Long Beach Senior Citizen Advisory Commission meeting time to be moved from 9 am to 10 am. Motion was made by Commissioner Schmidt, seconded by Commissioner Valencia, to discuss the time change of the Long Beach Senior Citizen Advisory Commission. The motion was PASSED by the following vote: Yes: 5 - Don Darnauer, Flora Easter, Robert Finney, Phyllis Schmidt and Michele Valencia No: 1 - William Smith Absent: 1 - Naida Tushnet PUBLIC PARTICIPATION Patrons Ms. Reside and Mr. Sive addressed the commission. NEXT MEETING The next meeting of the Long Beach Senior Citizen Advisory Commission will be held Wednesday, September 8, 2021 at 10 am - Teleconference ADJOURNMENT At 10:14 am, Commissioner Valencia adjourned the meeting. Transportation – Commissioners Darnauer and Smith UNFINISHED BUSINESS Motion to include a statement about the land on which we are meeting to be read at the start of every meeting: We recognize and acknowledge that we are on the land of the Tongva/Gabrieleño and the Acjachemen /Juaneño Nations who have lived and continue to live here. We thank them for their strength, perseverance and resistance. Suggested action: Approve Mr. Louis Robles, Jr., a tribal member of The Juaneno Band of Mission Indians, Acjachemen Nation will be sharing information about the local Native Tribes, their unique cultures & the historical significance of the Long Beach area, past & present. NEW BUSINESS Commissioner Schmidt asked for a motion to be discussed to move the Long Beach Senior Citizen Advisory Commission Meeting from 9 am to 10 am. PUBLIC PARTICIPATION Opportunity is given to those members of the public who would like to address the Senior Citizen Advisory Commission on non-agenda items. Each speaker is limited to three minutes. The Brown Act prohibits Commissioners from responding to comments on non-agenda items. NEXT MEETING The next meeting of the Long Beach Senior Citizen Advisory Commission will be held September 8, 2021 at the Long Beach Senior Citizen Center - upstairs, in room #202 at 9 am.
