CITY OF LONG BEACH WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 2021 SENIOR CITIZEN ADVISORY VIA TELECONFERENCE, 10:00 AM COMMISSION MINUTES Naida Tushnet, Chair Phyllis Schmidt, Commissioner Michele Valencia, Vice Chair William Smith, Commissioner Don Darnauer, Commissioner Robert Finney, Commissioner Flora Easter, Commissioner TELECONFERENCE ROLL CALL At 10:15 am, Commissioner Tushnet, called the meeting to order. Commissioners Don Darnauer, Flora Easter, Robert Finney, Phyllis Schmidt, Present: William Smith, Michele Valencia and Naida Tushnet PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE Commissioner Schmidt led the Pledge of Allegiance. READING OF MISSION STATEMENT Commissioner Valencia read the mission statement. Advocate for new thinking and science on aging for the culturally diverse population of Older adults in Long Beach and broaden knowledge in the areas of education, safety, housing, health, transportation, technology and the quality of life. GUEST SPEAKER Heather Van Wijk, Citywide Accessibility Coordinator from the City Manager’s Office discussed the City Infrastructure and Accessibility Requirements Under the American with Disabilities Act. APPROVAL OF MINUTES September 8, 2021 minutes were approved. Motion was made by Commissioner Finney, seconded by Commissioner Schmidt, to approve the August 11,2021 minutes. He also let them know he would be reaching out to HSA for an update and that Senior Exercise programming will be returning. STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS A. Community Relations - Commissioners Finney and Smith - NONE B. Crime Prevention and Safety - Commissioners Valencia and Easter- NONE C. Health - Commissioners Valencia and Easter - NONE D. Housing - Commissioners Tushnet, Darnauer and Schmidt- Commissioner Tushnet reported on the Emergency Rental Assistance Program and Senate Bills 9 and 10. E. Legislation - Commissioners Tushnet and Valencia- Commissioner Tushnet reported on SB512, SB2 ans SB1400. F. Technology - Commissioners Finney and Schmidt- NONE G. Transportation - Commissioners Darnauer and Smith - Commissioner Smith reported on Long Beach Transit and the Long Beach Aqualink. UNFINISHED BUSINESS Motion passed to postpone the Land Acknowledgement discussion to the October 13, 2021 Long Beach Senior Citizen Advisory Commission meeting. NEW BUSINESS Motion passed to postpone the re-writing of the Mission Statement discussion to the October 13, 2021 Long Beach Senior Citizen Advisory Commission meeting. PUBLIC PARTICIPATION Ms. Reside and Mr. Sive addressed the Long Beach Senior Citizen Advisory Commission. Transportation – Commissioners Darnauer and Smith UNFINISHED BUSINESS Motion to include a statement about the land on which we are meeting to be read at the start of every meeting: Mr. Louis Robles, Jr., a tribal member of The Juaneno Band of Mission Indians was going to review the acknowledgement and advise commissioners if statement is relevant: We recognize and acknowledge that we are on the land of the Tongva/Gabrieleño and the Acjachemen /Juaneño Nations who have lived and continue to live here. Wethank them for their strength, perseverance and resistance. Suggested action: Approve NEW BUSINESS Commissioner Schmidt would like to discuss rewriting the Reading of the Mission Statement PUBLIC PARTICIPATION Opportunity is given to those members of the public who would like to address the Senior Citizen Advisory Commission on non-agenda items. Each speaker is limited to three minutes. The Brown Act prohibits Commissioners from responding to comments on non-agenda items.
