CITY OF LONG BEACH WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 13, 2021 SENIOR CITIZEN ADVISORY TELECONFERENCE, 10:00 AM COMMISSION MINUTES Naida Tushnet, Chair Phyllis Schmidt, Commissioner Michele Valencia, Vice Chair William Smith, Commissioner Don Darnauer, Commissioner Robert Finney, Commissioner Flora Easter, Commissioner TELECONFERENCE - 10 am ROLL CALL At 10:10 am, Commissioner Tushnet, called the meeting to order. Commissioners Don Darnauer, Robert Finney, Phyllis Schmidt, William Smith, Present: Michele Valencia and Naida Tushnet Commissioners Flora Easter Absent: PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE Commissioner Smith led the Pledge of Allegiance. READING OF MISSION STATEMENT Commissioner Valencia read the mission statement. Advocate for new thinking and science on aging for the culturally diverse population of Older adults in Long Beach and broaden knowledge in the areas of education, safety, housing, health, transportation, technology and the quality of life. GUEST SPEAKER Professor & Archstone Foundation Endowed Chair, Gerontology Director, Iveris L. Martinez, PHD shared information regarding community organization, older adult services and resources. Motion was made by Commissioner Valencia, seconded by Commissioner Darnauer, to approve the October 13, 2021 minutes. The motion was carried by the following vote: Yes: 6 - Don Darnauer, Robert Finney, Phyllis Schmidt, William Smith, Michele Valencia and Naida Tushnet Absent: 1 - Flora Easter STAFF REPORT Recreation Superintendent, Ted Stevens gave an update on HSA meals and Senior programming. STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS A. Community Relations - Commissioners Finney and Smith - NONE B. Crime Prevention and Safety - Commissioners Valencia and Easter- NONE C. Health - Commissioners Valencia and Easter - Commissioner Valencia reported on the Covid boosters. D. Housing - Commissioners Tushnet, Darnauer and Schmidt- NONE E. Legislation - Commissioners Tushnet and Valencia- Commissioner Tushnet reported on the SB650, SB48, AB665, AB323, AB570 & AB849 bills. Commissioner Valencia reported on the Covid-19 vaccinations for City Mandates for high-risk indoor settings. F. Technology - Commissioners Finney and Schmidt- NONE G. Transportation - Commissioners Darnauer and Smith - Commissioner Smith reported that Long Beach Transit and water taxis have resumed fare collections. The Long Beach transit was recently authorized to purchase 20 new battery electric buses. Page 2 of 4 CITY OF LONG BEACH WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 13, 2021 SENIOR CITIZEN ADVISORY TELECONFERENCE, 10:00 AM COMMISSION MINUTES UNFINISHED BUSINESS Motion passed to read land acknowledgement at the beginning of every meeting: We recognize and acknowledge that we are on the land of the Tongva/Gabrieleño and the Acjachemen /Juaneño Nations who have lived and continue to live here. We thank them for their strength, perseverance and resistance. In their spirit may we strive to always honor and respect the wisdom of our elders. Motion was made by Commissioner Finney, seconded by Commissioner Valencia, to approve the land acknowledgement. The motion was carried by the following vote: Yes: 6 - Don Darnauer, Robert Finney, Phyllis Schmidt, William Smith, Michele Valencia and Naida Tushnet Absent: 1 - Flora Easter UNFINISHED BUSINESS Reading of mission statement was reviewed and changes were made. UPDATED TO: We advocate to improve the quality of life for Long Beach's culturally diverse older population by expanding knowledge and services related to education, health, housing, public transportation, safety, technology and language access. Motion was made by Commissioner Darnauer, seconded by Commissioner Schmidt to postpone the re-writing of the Mission Statement to the November 10, 2021 meeting. NEXT MEETING The next meeting of the Long Beach Senior Citizen Advisory Commission will be held Wednesday, October 13, 2021 at 10 am - Teleconference ADJOURNMENT At 11:05 am, Commissioner Naida adjourned the meeting.
