Khelfaoui, Ph.D., Superintendent of Schools Date: May 13, 2016 Re: School Choice Participation Vote for School Year 2016-2017 Please be advised that as required under the State School Choice Law each School Committee must annually review and discuss inter-district school choice and hold a public hearing. Consequently, we are requesting a public hearing to be held at the beginning of the regularly scheduled School Committee meeting of May 18, 2016 @ 6:30 pm in City Hall, Council Chambers. I am recommending that the Lowell Public Schools participate in the inter-district school choice program for grades 9-12, for the 2016-2017 school year. I am recommending to allot, but not to exceed, 30 seats within grades 9-12. The rationale for this is the availability of space at Lowell High School for grades 9-12. We do not anticipate any negative impact on the current programming, Lowell High School facilities, or class size. The state statute requires a School Committee vote only if the district is choosing to opt-out of the inter-district school choice program. If the School Committee in fact does choose to opt- out, a motion would need to be made to vote on that decision. The statute also requires that we identify the number of seats available and the grade levels in which we intend to provide the seats. Onotse Omoyeni, LHS junior and co-chair of our Headmaster’s Cultural Competency Task Force, has won the Princeton Prize in Race Relations for the Boston area (see Princeton University announcement below). Information about the prize is at http://www.princeton.edu/pprize/ The award includes a $1000 prize and an all-expenses paid trip to Princeton University for an awards ceremony and participation in a university symposium on race relations with award winners from around the country. Each honoree gives a speech before a group of Princeton students, professors, and alumni about her/his work. The fact that a student from Lowell won the prize for the Boston area, given all that has happened down there and the students who were involved, makes Onotse’s accomplishment all the more remarkable. Just as a reminder, Onotse also was invited by Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court Chief Justice Ralph Gants to intern with him this summer after he met her at an event here at LHS. We have a school full of remarkable students. It is especially fulfilling when one of them receives state and national accolades.
