MONDAY, MAY 14, 2018 COMMISSION CHAMBERS ELECTED AND APPOINTED OFFICIALS ARE ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND (One or more Elected or Appointed Officials may be in attendance) 9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. MANAGING NEGATIVE PUBLIC PARTICIPATION – Scott Paine The public has a right to be heard. At times, members of the public, exercising that right, can behave in ways that can be experienced by public officials (elected, appointed, or professional) as disrespectful or even abusive. This workshop explores what we should do in meetings, on social media and in the press to manage negative activity without curtailing the citizens’ right to be heard. 10:30 a.m. - 10:45 a.m. BREAK AND RE-SET FOR NEXT SESSION (Food is provided by the City) 10:45 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. PUBLIC TRUST AND MISTRUST – Scott Paine Public opinion pollsters have been documenting a dramatic decline in public trust for more than a decade. Parliamentary procedure is a useful tool for conducting meetings, assuring fairness, and completing business in an orderly manner. People who are knowledgeable about Robert’s Rules of Order can improve the quality of meetings and frequently affect the outcomes. What’s your “PQ” (Parliamentary Quotient)?
