Regular Meeting Active Adult Center Advisory Board January 17, 2023 A Regular Meeting of the Madison Heights Active Adult Center Advisory Board was called to order by Coordinator Cowan, January 17, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. at the Active Adult Center Municipal Building at 29448 John R Road, Madison Heights, MI 48071. Present: Bessler, Dalling, Patton, Ratliff, Salley, Smith, and Quigley. Also Present: Center Coordinator Cowan, DPS Director Almas, DPS Supervisor Ballantine, Councilor Wright and Councilman Fleming. Absent: Leuffgen, Topping An invocation was led by Ms. Cowan. 19-01. Minutes. Motion by Ms. Patton seconded by Ms. Quigley to adopt the minutes from the Regular Meeting of November 15, 2022 as printed. Yeas: Bessler, Dalling, Patton, Ratliff, Salley, Smith, and Quigley. Nays: None. Absent: Leuffgen, Topping. 19-02. Meeting Open to the Public. Carmela LaCommare shared info on the Senior Companion Program. She stated the program is looking for volunteers, but she also wanted to share info on the program in case any seniors need assistance. Jennifer will post flyers on the program at the Center. 19-03. Staff Report. Ms. Cowan reported on programs currently happening at the Center, and Center closings. Ms. Cowan also stated that staff and volunteers have worked very hard to go through 47 years of items at the Center in preparation for the move. Volunteers will be preparing items for a moving sale that will take place on February 16. 19-04. Maintenance Requests None. 1 1-17-23 AACAB Regular Meeting Active Adult Center Advisory Board January 17, 2023 19-05. Budget Requests None. 19-06. Unfinished Business. Mr. Ballantine updated the Board on the Civic Plaza Project. City Hall staff has moved back into their offices and the work is now starting on the Active Adult Center and the Library. The project is still running ahead of schedule. 19-07. New Business. None. 19-08. Treasurer’s Report. Treasurer’s reports from November and December 2022 were presented for approval. Motion by Ms. Patton seconded by Ms. Quigley to approve the reports as printed. Yeas: Bessler, Dalling, Patton, Ratliff, Salley, Smith, and Quigley. Nays: None. Absent: Leuffgen, Topping. 19-09. Council & Administration Updates. Councilor Wright reported that Fire Department awards were presented at the last Council meeting. Council also passed an amendment for new washing machines at the Fire House. Councilor Wright stated that the HREC Committee held a peace vigil at City Hall yesterday, on MLK Day. Councilor Wright stated the DPS did a great job with the Holiday Tree Lighting. Councilor Wright also stated that the Holiday Lights/Beautification drive around with the Board was superb. 2 1-17-23 AACAB Regular Meeting Active Adult Center Advisory Board January 17, 2023 Mr. Almas stated that the Holiday Lights/Beautification awards will be presented at the next Council meeting. Mr. Almas also stated that DPS has had a quiet winter so far, with little snow. However, last February had substantial snowfall, and they are prepared for that possibility. Mr. Almas reported that there will be an article in the Madison Park News where he and Mr. Ballantine give tips on preparing and coping with the winter weather and snow. Mr. Almas gave an update on current and upcoming road construction. He stated that the John R. construction has been moved to one year later, now to be done in 2025. Mr. Almas reported the Memorial Parade will be back this year, but there might be a route change due to construction. Councilman Fleming reported that Oakland County has created an Older Adult Services department and former Madison Heights Rep Jim Ellison is the new Chief. Councilman Fleming stated there are vacancies on several City Boards and they are listed on the City’s website if anyone is interested. Councilor Wright reported that the Charter Amendment Committee needs Board members as well. 19-10. Adjournment. Motion by Ms. Patton seconded by Ms. Quigley to adjourn the meeting at 1:52 pm.
