Regular Meeting Active Adult Center Advisory Board May 16, 2023 A Regular Meeting of the Madison Heights Active Adult Center Advisory Board was called to order by Chair Salley, May 16, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. at the Active Adult Center Municipal Building at 29448 John R Road, Madison Heights, MI 48071. Present: Bessler, Leuffgen, Ratliff, Salley, Topping and Quigley. Also Present: Center Specialist Parker, DPS Director Ballantine, Councilor Wright and Councilman Fleming. Absent: Cowan, Dalling, Patton, Smith. An invocation was led by Ms. Parker. 19-01. Minutes. Motion by Ms. Ratliff seconded by Ms. Leuffgen to adopt the minutes from the Regular Meeting of April 18, 2023. Yeas: Bessler, Leuffgen, Ratliff, Salley, Topping and Quigley. Nays: None. Absent: Dalling, Patton, Smith. 19-02. Meeting Open to the Public. Ms. Margene Scott questioned the handicapped parking at the new build. Mr. Ballantine did not have the plans in front of him, but informed Ms. Scott that he believed handicapped parking was going from approximately 8 spots to more than double. Ms. Scott stated she is on the City’s Charter Amendment Committee. She wanted to let everyone know that charter revisions will be presented to City Council on May 22, and they will go before voters in November. Ms. Scott stated she would be more than happy to explain any of the proposed revisions to anyone who is interested. 19-03. Staff Report. Ms. Parker (in Ms. Cowan’s absence) updated the Board on programs currently happening and upcoming at the Center. 1 5-16-23 AACAB Regular Meeting Active Adult Center Advisory Board May 16, 2023 19-04. Maintenance Requests None. 19-05. Budget Requests None. 19-06. Unfinished Business. Mr. Ballantine stated that the new build is going along as scheduled. They are currently finishing drywall and finishings. The contractor needed to update the transformer, which is part of the reason that DTE will be taking so long. They will be focusing on the parking lot now, which will be done in phases. Mr. Ballantine also stated that the library is officially open. 19-07. New Business. Ms. Parker reminded everyone that the Advisory Board Nominations start May 17 and continue through the last 10 business days of May and that the elections are on June 8 and 9. Ms. Quigley is up for re-election. She will be completing her 1st term. Ms. Leuffgen is completing her 2nd term and must take a year off. Ms. Smith is up for re-appointment. She will be completing her 1st term. 19-08. Treasurer’s Report. Ms Parker informed everyone that the prices of vending were increased due to rising costs of vending supplies. Motion by Ms. Quigley seconded by Ms. Ratliff to approve the March Treasurer’s report. Yeas: Bessler, Leuffgen, Ratliff, Salley, Topping and Quigley. Nays: None. Absent: Dalling, Patton, Smith. 2 5-16-23 AACAB Regular Meeting Active Adult Center Advisory Board May 16, 2023 Motion by Ms. Ratliff seconded by Ms. Leuffgen to approve the April Treasurer’s report. Yeas: Bessler, Leuffgen, Ratliff, Salley, Topping and Quigley. Nays: None. Absent: Dalling, Patton, Smith. 19-09. Council & Administration Updates. Councilor Wright stated that the basement waterproofing project at City Hall was approved, as was the 2024 Budget resolution, and that Council has gone to a consent agenda format. Councilman Fleming asked about parking at the Police Department and whether it would be available or not during construction. Ms. Parker and Mr. Ballantine reminded him about the bump out for the travel busses and assured him that there would be parking during all phases of the project. Councilman Fleming stated that Mike Salley is the Grand Marshal for the Memorial Parade this year. The parade route will start at Wilkinson School, travel to 11 Mile and end at the high school with a ceremony on the football field. Councilman Fleming stated that Police Chief Corey Haines will be retiring June 30, 2023. Happy 40th birthday to Sean Ballantine. Sean was officially promoted to DPS Director. The city is currently looking internally to back fill the positions that need to be filled in DPS. Mr. Ballantine wished to publicly thank the Women’s Club for the gift baskets they dropped off for National Public Works Week. Mr. Ballantine will be off May 19 through 30. 19-10. Adjournment.
