4. Bandshell Utilization Subcommittee (Geralds, Covert, King, Mier, Palazzolo)
The committee discussed plans to activate the bandshell space during the weeks between summer
concerts. Four events are being developed: Family Karaoke Night, a Drum Circle, Line Dancing Night,
and a community Paint Night in August. While dates and basic concepts are in place, the committee is
currently confirming event leads and logistical details before releasing a general “Save the Date”
announcement.
The group agreed to coordinate a cohesive theme that connects all four events, with distinct branding for
each individual activity. A marketing schedule will be followed to avoid redundancy: a single Save the
Date will go out first, with subsequent reminders issued at three weeks, two weeks, and the week of each
event.
Confirmed or proposed dates and details were reviewed: Family Karaoke Night is scheduled for July 16
from 7–8:30 p.m., and King has contacted Karaoke Krush to lead the event, with alternative options
being considered. The Drum Circle is planned for July 30 from 7–8:30 p.m., with Palazzolo checking on
a potential leader who could provide djembe drums and shakers; attendees would also be encouraged to
bring their own instruments. Line Dancing Night is scheduled for August 6 from 7:30–9 p.m., with
music provided by Sound Wave Detroit and dance instruction by Demetrius, a colleague of Covert. The
Paint Night, scheduled for August 20 from 7–8:30 p.m., will be developed further in partnership with the
Inside / Out committee and connected to the DIA art installations throughout the city. This event will
include a photo submission component tied to raffle entries and an invitation for participants to reflect
artistically on the pieces that resonate with them.
Motion by Geralds, Second by King to spend up to $200 for each of the four bandshell events, not
to exceed $800, with the goal of finding sponsors for each event if possible.
Yea: All
Nay: None
Motion Carries
The subcommittee expressed enthusiasm about offering this diverse lineup of engaging, family-friendly
events to the community.
5. Fundraiser Discussion
The board discussed concerns raised by Geralds and Covert regarding the process for initiating
fundraisers. In recent years, certain fundraising efforts have been launched without full board discussion
or approval, leading to instances where members were either unaware of the activities or unable to
adequately support them. Geralds emphasized the importance of communication and transparency.
To address this, the following motion was introduced:
Motion by Geralds, Second by King, requiring that all arts board fundraisers be discussed, voted
on, and approved by the Board prior to their launch.
Yea: All
Nay: None
Motion Carries
This does not include sponsorship for specific events such as Trail Tunes.
