Crime Commission Meeting Madison Heights, Michigan August 13, 2024 A Crime Commission Meeting was held on Tuesday, August 13, 2024 at 2:30 PM at City Hall - Executive Conference Room, 300 W. 13 Mile Rd. CALL TO ORDER Meeting called to order at 2:32 p.m. ROLL CALL PRESENT Martha Covert Alexandra Iaquinto Margarette Marentette Anthony Roberts Council Representative Sean Fleming Council Representative Alternate Quinn Wright ABSENT Beth Scott - excused Alternate Jeffrey Hilliard - unexcused ADDITIONS/DELETIONS None APPROVAL OF MINUTES Motion to approve the June 11, 2024 meeting minutes made by Covert, Seconded by Roberts. Voting Yea: Iaquinto, Marentette, Council Representative Fleming MEETING OPEN TO THE PUBLIC None present Chief's Report The PD held their Commendation Awards on July 16th. Officer Talya was awarded the community award for organizing the PD vs FD softball game and we will be doing the game again this year on September 1, 2024 at Rosie’s Park. There were 8 life saving awards given out to officers. The meritorious service award was given to Officer Lewis for a barricaded gunman situation. Reserve Officer of the year was given to Matt Pokorski, Police Officer of the Year was given to Kari Randolph, PSA of the year was given to Dave Thayer and Command Officer of the Year was given to Shawn Scofield. 1 We have been having some vandalism issues at Rosie’s park recently. We have been doing some extra patrols at the park recently and have had success. There were a few arrests, some tickets given out and some kids taken home to their parents. The PD will be patrolling the park at closing and after hours to deter any vandals from entering the park. We are also looking into adding a camera and some signs to the park. We recently had a serious homicide investigation. It was a sad and a difficult incident. This maybe one of the worse incidents the I have ever seen or experienced in my entire career. It was difficult for the community to handle and the officers to handle but the good news is there is some justice coming. The individuals have been charged with child abuse and homicide. There was a press conference held last Friday in regard to the case. We just offered our 52nd Police Officer a job. We are finally getting to the point where we are almost at full staffing. We have a few in the police academy and in background and they don’t count towards full staffing yet. With our dispatchers, we currently have 2 in background. We recently lost 2 and have 2 more in background. The SIU (Special Investigations Unit) has been run by Sgt. White by himself since 2021 and we are excited to get him some help. We have interviews scheduled for next Thursday for that position. We have two Co Responders that OCHN has hired. They are in the process of doing extensive training and ride a longs with each separate department. Sometime in mid September is when they will start working with the departments. We are in talks with the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office to house a Human Trafficking Task Force in our building. We are working on the memorandum of understanding between us and Oakland County now. Oakland County is trying to compile statistics to be approved for a grant for the task force so they will be working with Sgt. White to get their employee trained and to be able to qualify for the grant. We had the Cyber Security event last week and Officer Hirst did a fantastic job preparing for the presentation. Unfortunately, there was no attendance other than Ali, Officer Hirst and myself. The material is something that needs to be shared and talked about. We had some thoughts to maybe building this into the schools, maybe at parent night at school or orientation of the middle school. There would be a good audience at those events. We received an email from the IRS about scam prevention webinar that is being hosted. We will put the information out on social media for people to register and attend if they would like to. The K9 demo will be held on September 21, 2024 at Rosie’s Park. We will need someone to contact the DPS to make sure that there is nothing else scheduled at the park that 2 day. Commissioner Marentette will contact DPS to make sure that the park is open for the demonstration to be held. Council Report Council approved the fire striker contract to get some updated equipment for the fire department. The contract includes new gurneys and additional equipment. The city will be saving 68K over the next 4 years. The equipment maintenance is handled by the company also. The fire department will also be getting bullet proof vests. Our animal control officer will also be getting a new truck to replace the van that she currently has. Chief said there have been some issues with purchasing new vehicles. Other Police Departments are out bidding the City of Madison Heights and the inventory is selling out at the dealers. UNFINISHED BUSINESS Cyber Security Follow Up - This was discussed in the Chief’s report. K-9 Demonstration- This was discussed in the Chief’s report. Record our Holiday Greeting at the October 8, 2024 meeting - This was a reminder to wear red or green at the October meeting and the Holiday greeting from the Crime Commission will be recorded. NEW BUSINESS Work plan for 2025 - The commission will work on this at the October meeting to get it completed for next year. City Trunk or Treat Event on 10/26/2024 from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. - The city is holding the trunk or treat event this year at Civic Park. If the Crime Commission would like to set up a table and hand out candy, please let Secretary Schell know and she will let DPS know. Councilor Wright wanted to invite all of us to Revin in the Heights, a car show on Saturday, 9/14/24 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. The HREC partnered with the Fire Station to have the car show the same day as the Fire Department open house. There will be food trucks, a cooking contest and awards at the end of the car show. ADJOURNMENT Motion to adjourn the meeting made by Covert, Seconded by Marentette.
