A Historical Commission Meeting was held on Wednesday, April 12, 2023 at 6:30 PM at
Heritage Rooms in City Hall Basement, 300 W. 13 Mile Rd.
CALL TO ORDER
at 6:35 p.m. by Acting Chair Ballantine.

Motion by Bliss to excuse Chambliss, Ross, Suarez, & Suiter for giving notice. Second by Scott.
Passed unanimously.

ADDITIONS/DELETIONS
Add motion to issue certificate of appreciation to Tanya Graettinger as agenda item 11.
PRESENTATION
1. Special Tribute Honoring Barbara Geralds
Special Tribute proclamation honoring Barbara Geralds was presented to Laurie
Geralds and Jeff Geralds by Chair Ballantine.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
2. Approval of minutes from January 2023.
Motion by Bliss. Second by Mier. Passed unanimously.

MEETING OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
Jeff Geralds mentioned Clawson Historical Museum has a current cartography exhibit with four
historical local maps.
REPORTS
3. Chair & Vice Chair Updates - Ballantine
Chair Tanya Graettinger's term on the Historical Commission expired. Jennifer
Ballantine is Acting Chair at this meeting.
Motion by Bliss to nominate Ballantine as Chair, Mier as Vice Chair, and vacate
Treasurer position. Second by Kehoe. Passed unanimously.
4. Naming Committee - Chair Bliss, Scott
Motion by Bliss to use wording as amended for plaque honoring Robert Corbett.
Second by Mier. Passed unanimously.
"Robert "Bob" Corbett was a City Council member for 23 years and lifelong resident of
Madison Heights, Michigan. Mr. Corbett was instrumental in saving the library during
the Great Recession of 2008. He invested 22 years of his life on the Library Advisory
Board. The library's youth room was chosen to honor his commitment to the library and
creating accessible playgrounds."
Scott volunteered to serve on committee.
5. Experiencing Madison Heights Subcommittee - Chair Ballantine, Wright, Scott, Mier
The Heritage Rooms will reopen when the entire civic center complex reopens. Bliss
volunteered to create an exhibit on historical music and also volunteered to be on the
committee.
6. Digitizing Madison Heights Subcommittee - Chair Fleming, Bliss, Suiter
No report.
Motion by Scott to approve partnership for "Digitizing Madison Heights" project with
Madison Heights Public Library for an Improving Access to Information Library
Services and Technology Act Grant application. Second by Kehoe. Passed
unanimously.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS
7. Historical Commission Work Plan 2023
No updates needed to plan based on committee reports.
8. Heritage Rooms Volunteer Schedule
Volunteer sign-up sheet was passed around the room.

NEW BUSINESS
9. Historical Commission Work Plan 2024
Motion by Bliss to carry over goals from 2023 Work Plan to 2024 Work Plan. Second
by Mier. Passed unanimously.
10. Library Exhibit Space
Motion by Wright to allow Madison Heights Public Library to display and store
Heritage Rooms items in the library's exhibit area. Second by Mier. Passed
unanimously.
11. Issue certificate of appreciation to Tanya Graettinger
Motion by Mier. Second by Kehoe. Passed unanimously.
