A Human Relations and Equity Committee Meeting was held on Wednesday, March 29, 2023

APPROVAL OF MINUTES
1. Minutes of February 8, 2023
MEETING OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
Jennifer Nagle representing the Madison Heights Arts Board requested $200.00 for the Arts and
Pride event and for the Human Relations and Equity Commission to co-sponsor the event
scheduled for June 4, 2023 from 2 pm - 6 pm at Civic Center Park. E. Reetz, S. Murtaza, and
Liaison Hames volunteered for the sub-committee to help plan the event.
Motion made by E. Reetz, Seconded by S. Murtaza.
Voting Yea: Chair P. Szymanski, N. Fox, E. Reetz, S. Murtaza, Council Alternate Q. Wright.
Kevin Wright representing Madison Heights Citizens United requested the Human Relations
Equity Commission to co-sponsor two events:
1) Four Steps for Racial Recognition to take place on May 11, 2023 at 6:30 pm at the Madison
Heights Active Adult Center.

2) Juneteenth Flag Raising to take place on June 16, 2023 at 9:00 a.m. outside of City Hall.
Motion made by S. Murtaza, Seconded by N. Fox.

COUNCIL UPDATE
Council Alternate Q. Wright shared the opportunity for the Human Relations Equity
Commission to sponsor the following events:
Presentations: Early Jewish Detroit and Northwest Detroit by the Jewish Historical Society of
Michigan.
Bus Tours: Jewish Detroit History Talks and Bus Tour
Motion made by E. Reetz, Seconded by S. Murtaza.
Voting Yea: Chair P. Szymanski, N. Fox, E. Reetz, S. Murtaza, Council Alternate Q. Wright.
Group Tour of the Charles H. Wright Museum
Motion made by S. Murtaza, Seconded by E. Reetz.
Voting Yea: Chair P. Szymanski, N. Fox, E. Reetz, S. Murtaza, Council Alternate Q. Wright.
ROUNDTABLE
Cook Book update: HREC needs to select a vendor.
Plant Sale update: Not Spring - not date yet but it will be later in the year.
Memorial Day Parade: Unfortunately, no one on the HREC commission will be available to
participate as a group in this event. Will continue to brain-storm ideas on how to participate in
the future.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS
2. Juneteenth Craft or Activity
Craft or activity still to be determined. HREC members who will be available for the
Juneteenth event/HREC table this year include S. Murtaza, Council Alternate Q. Wright
and Staff Liaison H. Hames.
NEW BUSINESS
HREC Member Marie Urban has not attended nor been in communication regarding her HREC
appointment since August 2022 and it is recommended that she be removed administratively.
Motion made by Council Alternate Q. Wright, Seconded by Chair P. Szymanski.

The meeting was adjourned at 6:24 pm.
The next meeting will take place on Monday, April 17, 2023 at 6:00 pm.
