Human Relations and Equity Committee Meeting Madison Heights, Michigan June 22, 2023 A Human Relations and Equity Committee Meeting was held on Thursday, June 22, 2023 at 6:00 PM at Library - Event Room, 240 W. 13 Mile Rd. CALL TO ORDER N. Fox called the meeting to order at 6:05 pm. ROLL CALL PRESENT Chair Paige Szymanski (arrived after the meeting was called to order) Rebecca Chambliss Nickole Fox Syed Murtaza Council Representative Alternate Quinn Wright EXCUSED ABSENT Emily Reetz Council Representative Emily Rohrbach ALSO PRESENT HREC Staff Liaison, Heather Hames ADDITIONS/DELETIONS APPROVAL OF MINUTES 1. Minutes of May 15, 2023. Motion to approve the minutes of May 15, 2023 as written made by Murtaza. Seconded by Chambliss. All ayes, motion passes. MEETING OPEN TO THE PUBLIC No one present wishing to speak. REVIEW ORDINANCE 2194 2. Ordinance and Draft 2194 Szymanski as an attorney is concerned that the proposed ordinance language does not clarify the ordinance as written and has offered the following language. 1  No person shall (a) resist any police officer, any member of the police department, or any person duly empowered with police authority while in the discharge or apparent discharge of their duties, (b) provide false information to any police officer, or (c) in any way interfere with, obstruct, or hinder the officer in the discharge of their duties. Motion made by Murtaza and seconded by Chambliss to recommend updating the language to Ordinance 2194 as presented by Szymanski. All ayes, motion passes. COUNCIL UPDATE Details now available for updating charter language to go for vote in November. Next council meeting is Monday June 26, 2023. ROUND TABLE The HREC and Arts Board Disability Pride Month Art Exhibit pieces have been selected and will be on display for the month of July. The community art project will take place on Saturday July 22 at Civic Center Park. JHSM Bus Tour and Lecture Dates Two presentations at the Library from the Jewish Historical Society of Michigan planned for July 26 and August 2. Bus Tour on August 6 from 1-4 pm. One presentation is required to attend the bus tour, both presentations are encouraged. Car Show and RibBurn Competition Council Alternate Wright proposed fundraiser for HREC, September 16. Cross-cultural event bringing people together with shared interest for a more widely inclusive event with a car show and rib cook-off competition, and invite food trucks.
