A Human Relations and Equity Committee Meeting was held on Thursday, January 18, 2024 at
6:00 PM at Library - Breckenridge Room, 240 W. 13 Mile Rd.
CALL TO ORDER
Meeting called to order at 6:08 pm by Chair Szymanski.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Motion made by Murtaza-Rose to approve the minutes from November 28, 2023, Seconded by
Fox. Passed unanimously.

MEETING OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
No one present wishing to speak.
CALENDAR
Motion made by Council Representative Alternate Rohrbach for the Human Relations and
Equity Commission to refer to Drexel University's religious holiday calendar as a starting point
for creating the HREC 2024 Calendar and to have Chair Szymanski create social media content
for holidays in January and February 2024, and S. Murtaza-Rose create social media content for
March 2024, Seconded by Murtaza-Rose. Passed unanimously.
JUNETEENTH
Date is set for Saturday, June 15, 2024 by Madison Heights Citizens United.

MOTORAMA AND SMOKE
Motion made by Council Representative Alternate Rohrbach to give Council Representative
Wright the authority to work with community partners to secure a date for the Motorama and
Smoke event with a goal for July 2024 in order to date can be set prior to the city brochure
deadline with the caveat that if an exact date cannot be set prior to deadline that the Human
Relations and Equity Commission will still advertise the event without a date but include a link
that will direct people to a webpage with the most current event details, Seconded by Fox. Passed
unanimously.
COOKBOOK
The cookbook subcommittee discussed progress and plan for ways to promote and encourage
cookbook entries from community, including advertising the project in the city brochure.
BOOK CLUB
Novels and Neighbors is now accepting title suggestions through January 23 and voting will take
place January 24-30 so that titles from April-August can be advertised in the city brochure.
Suggestions and voting will take place on the Human Relations and Equity Commission social
media pages and in the library or by phone to the Staff Liaison, Heather Hames at the Library.
