Human Relations and Equity Committee Meeting Madison Heights, Michigan June 20, 2024 A Human Relations and Equity Committee Meeting was held on Thursday, June 20, 2024 at 6:00 PM at Library - Breckenridge Room, 240 W. 13 Mile Rd. CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order by Fox at 6:08 p.m. ROLL CALL PRESENT Nickole Fox Syed Murtaza-Rose Alec Yu Council Representative Quinn Wright Council Representative Alternate Emily Rohrbach Also present Staff Liaison Heather Hames Motion made by Council Representative Quinn Wright to excuse Chair Paige Szymanski and Jessica Showers, Seconded by Murtaza-Rose. Voting Yea: Fox, Murtaza-Rose, Yu, Council Representative Wright. ABSENT Aaron Brown Rebecca Chambliss Madison Student Delegate Colton Chambliss 1. Minutes of May 16, 2024 Motion made by Council Representative Wright to approve the minutes of May 16, 2024, Seconded by Murtaza-Rose. Voting Yea: Fox, Murtaza-Rose, Yu, Council Representative Wright WORK PLAN UPDATES The book club is currently accepting recommendations for titles for upcoming discussions. The cookbook project is ongoing. Next focus is to create community contest to design art, including cover art for the cookbook. Motion made by Murtaza-Rose to have Showers create content for Disability Pride Month and Hames to create content for Independence Day, Seconded by Yu. Voting Yea: Fox, Murtaza-Rose, Yu, Council Representative Wright 1  2. Rev'n in the Heights Motion made by Council Representative Wright to create a subcommittee for Rev'n in the Heights to include Council Representative Wright, Murtaza-Rose and Brown, Seconded by Fox. Voting Yea: Fox, Murtaza-Rose, Yu, Council Representative Wright. Motion made by Council Representative Wright to set the date for Rev'n in the Heights as September 14, 2024 from 10 am - 3 pm; approve the logo made by Pfaff Designs; approve the site plan; and approve the budget at $8,000 not to exceed funds raised for the purpose of this event, Seconded by Yu. Voting Yea: Fox, Murtaza-Rose, Yu, Council Representative Wright. NEW BUSINESS 3. Aunt Flow Project for Madison Heights Public Library Library is seeking a recommendation from the Human Relations and Equity Commission on where to make free period products available in the Library for the Aunt Flow project. Motion made by Council Representative Wright to recommend that the Library place the free period products in all library restrooms for inclusivity and recommends that all City departments consider doing the same, Seconded by Yu. Voting Yea: Fox, Murtaza-Rose, Yu, Council Representative Wright. 4. Communication Boards for Madison Heights Parks The Human Relations and Equity Commission discussed support of this project and are interested in finding out more about the boards before making a recommendation. No action was taken. 5. ADA Anniversary Celebration Motion made by Yu to co-sponsor, support, and promote the ADA Anniversary Celebration taking place on July 13, 2024 at Civic Center Park, Seconded by Murtaza- Rose.
