Human Relations and Equity Committee Meeting Madison Heights, Michigan July 18, 2024 A Human Relations and Equity Committee Meeting was held on Thursday, July 18, 2024 at 6:00 PM at Library - Breckenridge Room, 240 W. 13 Mile Rd. CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order by Murtaza-Rose at 6:00 p.m. ROLL CALL PRESENT Nickole Fox Syed Murtaza-Rose Jessica Showers Alec Yu Council Representative Quinn Wright Council Representative Alternate Emily Rohrbach Also present: Heather Hames, staff liaison Motion made by Showers to excuse Chair Paige Szymanski, Seconded by Yu. Motion passes unanimously. Motion made by Council Representative Wright to excuse Aaron Brown, Rebecca Chambliss, and Madison Student Delegate Colton Chambliss, Seconded by Fox. Motion passes unanimously. APPROVAL OF MINUTES 1. Minutes of June 20, 2024 Motion made by Yu to approve the Minutes of June 20, 2024, Seconded by Council Representative Wright. Motion passes unanimously. MEETING OPEN TO THE PUBLIC No one present wishing to speak. REPORTS 2. Book Club Book Club will begin meeting every other month beginning in October and will read The Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler in October, Season of Love by Helena Greer in December, James by Percival Everett in February, and Evil Eye by Etaf Rum in April. 1  3. Calendar and Social Media Content Upcoming social media posts will be International Day of the Worlds' Indigenous People August 9 by Yu; Women's Equality Day August 26 by Showers; Wellness month by Showers; and Black Business Owners Month by Council Representative Alternate Rohrbach. 4. Cookbook The cookbook project is ongoing and will include more social media posts to draw more attention to the project. 5. Rev'n in the Heights Rev'n in the Heights is ongoing with continued promotion for the upcoming event on September 14 from 10 am - 3 pm. UNFINISHED BUSINESS 6. Communication Boards for Madison Heights Parks Motion made by Murtaza-Rose that the Human Relations and Equity Commission recommends that the City seeks the advice of an expert such as one of the local school district's Special Education Departments, speech pathologist, or Autism Alliance of Michigan related to the content and review the legality of utilizing what looks like may be intellectual property prior to adding the City's logo to any signs. Seconded by Yu. Motion passes unanimously.
