Human Relations and Equity Committee Meeting Madison Heights, Michigan September 19, 2024 A Human Relations and Equity Committee Meeting was held on Thursday, September 19, 2024 at 6:00 PM at Library - Breckenridge Room, 240 W. 13 Mile Rd. CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order by liaison Hames at 6:00 p.m. ROLL CALL PRESENT Aaron Brown Jessica Showers Alec Yu Council Representative Quinn Wright Council Representative Alternate Emily Rohrbach Also present, staff liaison Heather Hames Motion by Brown to excuse Syed Murtaza-Rose, Seconded by Yu. All ayes, motion passes. ABSENT Rebecca Chambliss Madison Student Delegate Colton Chambliss APPROVAL OF MINUTES 1. Minutes of August 15, 2024 Motion by Brown to approve minutes of August 15, 2024, Seconded by Showers. All ayes, motion passes. MEETING OPEN TO THE PUBLIC No one present wishing to speak. HREC OFFICERS 2. Officers Motion by Showers to appoint Alec Yu as Chair and Aaron Brown as Vice-Chair, Seconded by Council Representative Wright. All ayes, motion passes. REPORTS 3. Book Club Update 1  Novels and Neighbors book club now officially meets every other month. October's book is Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler on October 8, 2024. Print and digital copies are available at the library or in the Libby app. 4. Calendar and Social Media Content October's features will be Rosh Hashanah October 2-4, 2024; Yom Kippur October 11- 12, 2024; Indigenous People's Day October 14, 2024; and Diwali October 31-November 1, 2024. 5. Cookbook Update Cookbook committee is seeking additional committee members. 6. Revin' in the Heights Update Revin' in the Heights was very successful raising $4,000 and with attendance of about 500 people. Members had very positive feedback from the community and the Fire Station wants to collaborate again next year. Motion by Council Representative Wright to set the Revin' in the Heights date next year for Saturday, September 13, 2025, Seconded by Brown. All ayes, motion passes. 7. Summary Report August 2023 - July 2024 HREC members were given a copy of the report prepared for City Council. UNFINISHED BUSINESS Motion by Brown to appoint Alec Yu to the Arts and Pride committee and Jessica Showers to the Disability Pride committee, Seconded by Council Representative Wright. All ayes, motion passes.
