MADISON HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION Regular Meeting – November 14, 2014 Attending: Co-Chairman John Solu; Members, , David Luber, Alberta Marcy, Carmine Toto, William VanRyzin and Margaret Weisgerber; Recording Secretary Laurie Hagerich. Absent: Co-Chairman Janet Foster; Members, John Forte and Joseph Longo; Council Liaison Robert Catalanello. The meeting was called to order as an open public meeting at 7:30 p.m. in accordance with the Open Public Meetings Act. The October 14, 2014, minutes were considered and by unanimous consent, the minutes were approved as written. Follow Up: TCC Applications update: Mr. Toto reported there were no applications in the Historic Districts that he is aware of. Sign and Façade applications update: There were no new sign applications before the Sign and Façade Committee in the Downtown Historic District. For Action: Reorganization for 2015 MHPC Initiatives: This matter will be taken up at the December meeting when Ms. Foster is present. Follow up on September/October applications: Ms. Marcy noted the storage shed and fence at 57 Ridgedale Avenue are now on the property, although not in total compliance with MHPC’s recommendations. For Discussion: Bottle Hill Historic District 10th Anniversary: Mr. Solu mentioned Borough Engineer Robert Vogel will make sure the road is paved in 2015 and that traffic calming measures are put into effect. The Friends of Bottle Hill Historic District will meet with Mr. Vogel to make sure they are in agreement on their concerns and priorities being met as closely as possible. The Borough will be installing new curbing at the Central/Ridgedale intersection to encourage trucks and other traffic to use Central, rather than Ridgedale Avenue. Mr. VanRyzin mentioned he attended a meeting of the Open Space, Recreation and Historic Preservation Advisory Committee and that committee is still interested in its goal to purchase additional property to link Summerhill Park and the Luke Miller property and would like MHPC’s support in this goal. It was agreed MHPC members would attend the next meeting of OSRHP on December 10. 2014 Annual Report/Participation Metrics: Mr. VanRyzin will begin working on the report using last year’s format. Several possibilities for the cover picture were discussed and it was decided to use a picture of the United Methodist Church on Madison Avenue, where restoration work of the interior, new roof and new copper gutters have been completed. Other projects to be highlighted in the report would be the work of Drew University in saving and restoring the historic wall on Madison Avenue. Ms. Hagerich will complete the attendance record of MHPC members and return same to the Borough Clerk. Ms. Marcy mentioned that Fran and Chris Clinton, owners of one of the Jersey cottages on Ridgedale Avenue, recently installed a new roof of “weathered wood” colored shingles, in keeping with the architectural character of this building and the neighboring structures. .
