Historic Preservation Commission

MADISON HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION Regular Meeting – November 15, 2016 Attending: Co-Chairmen John Solu and Janet Foster; Members, John Forte, Karen Jeisi, Chris Kellogg, Mary Ellen Lenahan, David Luber and Carmine Toto; Council Liaison Patrick Rowe; and Recording Secretary Laurie Hagerich. Absent: Member, William VanRyzin. The meeting was called to order as an open public meeting at 7:30 p.m. in accordance with the Open Public Meetings Act. The October 11, 2016, minutes were considered and by unanimous consent the minutes were approved as written. For Action: Sign and Façade applications: Mr. Solu reported the two Sign Applications for businesses on Waverly Place and Waverly Lane have not yet been completed and submitted. Mr. Kellog noted that parts of the façade on the Madison Trust Building on Waverly Place is deteriorated and in need of repairs to insure safety of patrons and pedestrians. Mr. Solu noted appropriate parties have been told about this condition. Old Business: 173 Ridgedale Avenue: There was good news that the revised subdivision plans for property at 173 Ridgedale Avenue have been approved by the Planning Board and the existing farmhouse dwelling will remain on the property. The Commission was in favor of giving recognition to the owner and developer Alan Andreas for his efforts to save this historic home. Mr. VanRyzin will be asked to photograph the property and include this recognition in the MHPC’s Annual Report. Mr. Kellogg asked if there were any action or recommendations from the Borough after the Historic Preservation Symposium held on April 27 organized by Jeffrey Gertler. Mr. Rowe offered to follow up with Borough officials and report at the next meeting. New Business: NJ Historic Trust is holding its 2016 NJ Forum History Conference on Friday and Saturday, November 18 and 19 at College of St. Elizabeth. Ms. Lenahan will email further details on this program as well as the history programs being offered by Rutgers University at the Camden NJ campus in the Spring of 2017. These educational programs include a Primer for Historic Preservation Commissions and a program on cemeteries. All are invited on Saturday, November 19, at 9:30 am for the dedication ceremony for the Triangle at Hillcrest Park in memory of the late Laurence Taber, Borough Historian and member of this Commission. It was noted the owner of the Redmond Home on Green Avenue is proceeding with the porch and façade restoration. The meeting was adjourned at 8:05 p.m. Laurie Hagerich, Recording Secretary
