Shade Tree Management Board Madison, NJ 07940 Minutes of December 21, 2017 Meeting The Shade Tree Management Board held its regular monthly meeting on December 21, 2017 beginning at 8:00 AM in the Committee Room of the Hartley Dodge Memorial, 50 Kings Road, Madison, NJ. Call to Order: Gene Cracovia called the meeting to order. Present: Gene Cracovia, Alice Wade, Nancy Bruce, Stephen Miller,Tom Salaki,Brian Monaghan,Vince Licari, Paul Alloca, Carmella Vitale, and Ken O’Brien. Absent: Alan Andreas and Penny Garman. Minutes: The November minutes were approved. The Board addressed the following items of business: Public Contacts • Gene noted that anemail was received from a resident on Garfield Road thanking the Board for removing two trees. Council Liaison Report • It was noted that this could possibly be Carmella’s last meeting as Council Liaison. Gene thanked her for her valuable input and service to the Board. • Carmella suggested that the STMB give a presentation to the town council explaining what we do and what are plans are for the future. Possible presentation should be scheduled for February. Borough Tree Status • Removal/ Tree Pruning –Penny submitted a final report. She reported that YTD 111 trees have been remove, 107 have been training pruned, 7 streets have been pruned, and 105 trees have been planted. She noted that she gave Vince the 2018 new tree order totaling 105 trees. • Honor Tree Service has been awarded the contact for pruning and some tree removal for the next 2 years. • It was decided that a meeting should be set up with Jim Matina to discuss power line trimming. The meeting would be helpful in increasing dialog between STMB and the electric company. • Construction/Street Trees Protection-Alice noted that some group is stapling advertisements to town trees. The group will be contacted to advise them of advertisements restrictions on Borough trees. Budget Report • 2017 budget $117,650 • Expended This Month: $5042.5 Honor Tree Services $126 Richview Consulting $14.36 Office supplies $60.00 Tree Day Registration • Total Expended YTD $84,746.61 • Encumbered $15,957.75 • Unexpended $32,904.39 FMST The FMST planted a large swamp white oakat the Summerhill Arboretum. Nancy said the party honoring Judy Mullins was well attended and deserved. She also noted that Tom Salaki will be presenting to the town council regarding the establishment of the Summerhill Arboretum on January 29th. NEW BUSINESS • ArborPro will be giving a training session for board members and town employees on January 22nd at the DPW office at 9AM. • Gene believes that it is time to assess the accuracy ofour tree inventory. Money should be set aside and Rich Wolowitz might lead the effort. COMMUNITY FORESTRY PLAN • It was noted the new 5year plan has been approved by the state. PARKS ADVISORY COMMITEE • Paul said that Tom Salaki and Debbie Mantone will be joining the PAC. TREE CITY ANNUAL REPORT Nancy has filled out the application and will file it accordingly.
