The Shade Tree Management Board held its regular meeting at 8:00AM on Thursday,
June 17, 2021 in the Borough Zoom meeting room.
Call to Order by Chairman Gene Cracovia. Reading of the Sunshine Law.
Members present: Gene Cracovia, Judy Honohan, Stephen Miller, Kate Bartley, Alan
Andreas, Nancy Bruce, Vince Licari, Brian Monaghan, Tom Salaki
Members absent:
Liaisons present: Joan Maccari (MEC), Rich Wolowicz (Arborist), Chris Schorr (Friends
of Madison Shade Trees), Ken O’Brien (DPW), Lisa Ellis (Borough), John Hoover
(Council)

Minutes: May 2021 minutes approved as corrected.
Public Contacts/Correspondence: Ash trees will be removed if they are more than
20% dead. On Old Greenhouse Lane a resident removed trees on an adjacent property
when the line was unclear. Property line has been adjusted and the resident will replace
improperly removed trees. Twelve permits issued in May for removal of 42 trees with 10
requiring replacement planting. To date in June 4 permits have been issued for 6
removals with one required replacement.
Council Liaison: Madison has received a $500,000 grant to make Dodge field and
playground ADA compliant. Plans for use of 2021 and 2022 Federal funds of about $1.8
million are being developed.
Public 2021 Planting: 112 trees have been planted this spring. Hope is to plant an
additional 15 or so this fall to meet resident requests. Approval was given for $4,000 of
STMB funds for tree planting at MRC meadow. It will be combined with Open Space
funds and $2,000 from Friends of Madison Shade Trees. Parking lot #3 euonymus
plantings need pruning once those responsible have been trained.
TCC (Technical Coordinating Committee: No report.
Drew Forest Preservation: Borough Council approved the Drew Forest Preservation
Resolution. Ray Codey is working closely with Drew in seeking a win-win resolution for
both the borough and University. There is a public guided tour of the forest planned for
Saturday, June 19 at 11:00.

Parks Advisory Committee: Tom Salaki has stepped down as Chair. The Parks Master
Plan will have to be revised and rebid.
Friends of Madison Shade Trees (FMST Chris Schorr): Friends will plant about 15
additional trees in Summerhill and Memorial Parks. DPW may be able to help and other
costs will be covered by Friends. They will continue to meet through the summer on
Zoom to support the efforts to preserve the Drew Woodlands.
MEC: Is working in support of the Drew Forest Preservation effort. They will have a
table at the Madison Farmer’s Market.
Open Space: No meeting.
Action Items:
Gene and Judy will meet with DPW to clarify planting process and procedures.
Chris will provide a specific plan and locations for the planting of 15 trees.
Alan will attend the next TCC meeting on July 6 at 2:30 in the Committee Room
Gene will send an email with details of the Drew Forest Tour.
Judy will compile a list of 2018 plantings to inform pruning needs.
All: complete windshield surveys by July 15 meeting.
