Sustainable Madison Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes August 20, 2019 Chairperson, Kathleen Caccavale, called the meeting to order at 1:02 pm. STATEMENT IN COMPLIANCE WITH THE OPEN PUBLIC MEETINGS ACT: “In compliance with the Open Public Meetings Act, adequate notice of this meeting of the Sustainable Madison Advisory Committee (SMAC) Meeting was provided by transmitting a copy of the meeting notice to the Madison Eagle and Morris County Daily Record, posting a copy on the bulletin board at the main entrance of the Hartley Dodge Memorial, and filing a copy in the office of the Clerk. This notice was made available to members of the general public.” The following members acknowledged their presence: Kathleen Caccavale, Chairperson Peter Fried, Resident/Regular Member Joan Maccari, MEC Representative/Regular Member Lisa Jordan, Resident/Regular Member Angelique Devost, Resident/Regular Member July 29 minutes were unanimously approved. Approval of a Community Visioning Statement, as in R248-2019, is needed from the Sustainable Madison Advisory Committee (SMAC) for the Green Visioning Item in our Sustainable Jersey application. The following statement was unanimously approved: A Community Vision of a Green Madison August 20, 2019 1. To see residents of Madison green their yards by planting shade trees, pollinator gardens and native plants, reducing fertilizer and pesticide use, and using lawn care equipment that reduces noise and air pollution and promotes clean air, clean water, sustainability, and a healthy environment for all Madison residents 2. To see residents, businesses and Madison Borough lower energy costs through use of energy audits, insulation, solar panels or other sustainable sources of energy, adjusting thermostat settings, and through educational outreach and other incentives 3. To see a reduced trash stream in Madison by consuming less, discarding less, reusing more, and recycling more efficiently, and through educational outreach. Outstanding “Must Revise” action items were reviewed. Members summarized their plans to complete these actions. Only one of the “Must Revise” actions is required for silver certification in this cycle (mandatory Green Team action - SJ required us to upload a signed copy of the ordinance establishing the Green Team, which was done), but all additional “approved” actions will add to our total points. Looking forward, we plan to remove outdated documents and information from the SMAC and environmental commission pages on Rosenet, and add updated information. It was pointed out that about 50% of the electricity used by municipal facilities is used by the water department. And 60% of Madison’s energy comes from non-carbon sources, including nuclear generation. Purchase of alternative fuel police vehicles, and other vehicles is not yet realized, but appears to be in process. Several distribution memos are still outstanding and may need to be submitted on November 17 for the next round of Sustainable Jersey approvals. A photo of the plaque with Madison’s Sustainable Jersey certifications from 2010, 2013, and 2016 is displayed on the Sustainable Madison page on Rosenet. The next meeting of Sustainable Madison Advisory Committee (SMAC) will be September 17, 2019 at 1:00 pm. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 2:09 pm.
