Sustainable Madison Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes July 21, 2020 Meeting was conducted via Zoom. Chairperson Kathleen Caccavale called the meeting to order at 1:36 P.M. Statement in Compliance with Open Meetings Act was read. The following members were present: Kathleen Caccavale, Chair/Regular Member Gene Cracovia, Resident/Regular Member Angelique Devost, Resident/Regular Member Peter Fried, Resident/Regular Member Lisa Jordan, Resident/Regular Member Joan Maccari, MEC Representative/Regular Member Marilyn Musielski, Resident/Regular Member Stephen Tindall, School Board Representative/Regular Member Absent members: Maureen Byrne, Borough Council Liaison/Regular Member Guests: Becca Safi, Student Intern Clair Whitcomb – MEC Chair • June minutes were unanimously approved and will be submitted to Rosenet. • Steve Tindall provided the following schools update: o 8 Sustainable Policies have been published on the school’s web site o New director of facilities has been named – John Eschmann • Members reviewed status on 18 September/November action items. • Becca provided an update on the ‘Build Out’ analysis – maps were shared which provided more details on Madison’s land use. • Climate Action Plans/Community Energy Plans – Peter stated that this initiative is looking for community-based climate/energy action plans; possibly use Princeton’s plan as a model and 1  there is a push to involve corporate partners. Outreach to the DDC and the Chamber of Commerce might help identify such partners; also investigating if adjacent towns would be interested in joining this effort. • Community Solar Initiative: Peter reported that Madison has joined the “National Community Solar Partnership (NCSP)” which is a DOE web-site community where people can exchange questions, answers and ideas. • Gene reported that a FAQ sheet on the new Tree Protection Ordinance is being sent out with this month’s electric bills – this should help residents know about the new ordinance. Two volunteer interns have been trained and are actively auditing/correcting Madison’s street tree inventory. • Kathi attended a meeting at Realogy to review the site’s green infrastructure. One of the challenges has been the use of impervious pavers. They were slippery in the winter and the multiple seams could catch heels. Different replacement permeable coverings are being considered. • Kathi walked some of the MRC and Summerhill trails and noted that maintenance is required. She suggested that different Madison volunteer groups consider adopting a portion of a trail and be responsible for yearly maintenance. The next SMAC meeting will be on August 18, 2020 at 1:30 P.M.
