CITY OF MALDEN MASSACHUSETTS Sign Design Review Committee Meeting Date: June 10, 2021 9:06 AM – 9:52AM Members in Attendance: Barbara Murphy Deborah Burke Nelson Miller Craig Spadafora Members not in Attendance: Yem Lip Dave Morse Also in Attendance: Jim Tuxbury Irene Macarelli Meeting called to order - 9:02 AM Approval of minutes: The Committee voted to approve the April 8, 2021, and the May 13, 2021meeting minutes with a motion made by Nelson Miller seconded by Barbara Murphy. 4 Yea 0 Nea Updates from Compliance: 539 Salem St. – TDM Church – they had several pennants hanging from the railing. We advised them of the sign ordinance and the fact that pennants are prohibitied. They were taken down. 103 Commercial St. – “Cabinext USA” sign was installed without approval and/or permits from the sign design committee. We had the same issue with this company on Eastern Ave. The Eastern Ave. location was closed by a constable. We left Irene’s contact info and they applied for a permit. They are on the docket today. 661 Salem St. – “Belayo Events” sign was installed without approval and/or permit from the sign design committee. We left Irene’s contact info and they applied for a permit. They are on the docket today. 17 Charles St. – Family & Friends Auto Repair – had pennants attached to a fence. They were advised of the sign ordninance and the fact that pennants are prohibited, last month, and they continued to display the pennants. 2 tickets were issued and they took down the pennants. 397 Salem St. – J & S Beauty Supply – sign was installed without approval and/or permit from the sign design committee. We left Irene’s contact info and advised them to contact her for an application. 1.) The committee reviewed a sign application from Belayo Events located at 661 Salem Street. Belinda, the owner was present. Motion was made by Nelson Miller, seconded by Barbara Murphy to approve this sign application. 4 Yea 0 Nea – Miller Yea, Burke Yea, Murphy Yea, Spadafora Yea 2.) The committee reviewed a sign application from BAB Korean Bistro located at 205 Centre St. Ricky of CC Signs was present. Motion was made by Barbara Murphy, seconded by Deborah Burke to approve this application with the following condition: a.) Lights are to be turned off one hour after close of business. 4 Yea 0 Nea - Miller Yea, Burke Yea, Murphy Yea, Spadafora Yea 3.) The committee reviewed a sign application from Beacon Sales located at 185 – 197 Commercial Street. Andrew of Beacon Sales was present. Motion was made by Deborah Burke, seconded Nelson Miller to approve this sign application. 4 Yea 0 Nea – Miller Yea, Burke Yea, Murphy Yea, Spadafora Yea 4.) The committee reviewed a sign application from TDM Christian Child Care located at 539 Salem Street. Lorena was present. Motion was made by Barbara Murphy, seconded by Nelson Miller to approve this temporary banner with the following condition: a.) Temporary banner can be displayed twice within the year, not to exceed 30 days each time. 4 Yea 0 Nea – Miller Yea, Burke Yea, Murphy Yea, Spadafora Yea 5.) The committee reviewed a sign application from Cabinext USA Inc. Motion was made by Nelson Miller, seconded by Barbara Murphy to table this application because no one was present to represent this sign. 4 Yea 0 Nea – Miller Yea, Burke Yea, Murphy Yea, Spadafora Yea 6.) The committee reviewed a sign application from Alma Pizza & Kitchen located at 637 Broadway. Paola was present. Motion was made by Deborah Burke, seconded by Barbara Murphy to approve this sign. 4 Yea 0 Nea – Miller Yea, Burke Yea, Murphy Yea, Spadafora Yea Open Discussion: 1.) The committee discussed putting temporary signs at J Malden Center for the Malden summer festivals. These will be municipal signs installed at a private building; therefore, no approval vote of the sign design review committee is needed. It will be 1 vinyl banner facing down pleasant Street towards traffic and pedestrians and one vinyl banner facing westerly towards the Malden T. Deborah Burke will submit a sign application. 2.) The committee discussed the pantone colors required for the 2 United Properties. Irene will reach out to Andy to confirm the pantone number.
