CITY OF MALDEN MASSACHUSETTS Sign Design Review Committee Meeting Minutes Date: July 08, 2021 9:04 AM – 9:46AM Members in Attendance: Yem Lip Deborah Burke Barbara Murphy Craig Spadafora, Chair Members not in Attendance: Nelson Miller Also in Attendance: Dave Morse Jim Tuxbury Irene Macarelli Meeting called to order - 9:04 AM Approval of minutes: The Committee voted to approve the June 10, 2021, meeting minutes with a motion made by Barbara Murphy, seconded by Deborah Burke. 4 Yea 0 Nea Updates from Compliance: 539 Salem St. – TDM Church – had several pennants flying from the fence. We advised them that pennants are prohibited under the sign ordinance. They were removed by the church. 17 Charles St. – “Family & Friends Auto Repair” had several pennants attached to a fence. They were advised of them being prohibited. They removed some of them and elected to keep some. Tickets were issued. Pennants were removed after two tickets. 510 Salem St. – “Boston Brew Co” sign removed from a tree pit. 808 Salem St. - “Boston Brew Co” sign removed from a tree pit. 1175 Salem St. - “Boston Brew Co” sign removed from a tree pit. Waite St. & Church St. – “Round the Clock Movers” sign removed from a tree pit. Broadway & Eastern Ave. – “Tons of Cash For Diabetic Supplies” – four signs removed from telephone poles. Maplewood Square – “Tons of Cash For Diabetic Supplies” – five signs removed from telephone poles. Linden Square - “Tons of Cash For Diabetic Supplies” –twelve signs removed from telephone poles. Center & Middlesex St. - “Tons of Cash For Diabetic Supplies” –five signs removed from telephone poles. Main & Exchange St. - “Tons of Cash For Diabetic Supplies” –four signs removed from telephone poles. Main & Center St. - “Tons of Cash For Diabetic Supplies” –four signs removed from telephone poles. 34 “Tons of Cash For Diabetic Supplies” signs were removed from city poles. An email was sent to the company advising them of the sign ordinance. 1.) The committee reviewed a sign application from Speedway located at 214 Broadway. No one was present to represent this sign. Motion was made by Barbara Murphy, seconded by Deborah Burke to approve this sign application. 4 Yea 0 Nea – Lip Yea, Burke Yea, Murphy Yea, Spadafora Yea 2.) The committee reviewed a sign application from Urbanos Furniture by Miranda Homes located at 477 Eastern Ave. No one was present to represent this sign. Motion was made by Deborah Burke, seconded Barbara Murphy to table this sign application. 4 Yea 0 Nea – Lip Yea, Burke Yea, Murphy Yea, Spadafora Yea 3.) The committee reviewed a sign application from Maylene’s Consulting located at 198 Broadway. Maylene Tene was present. Motion was made by Barbara Murphy, seconded by Deborah Burke to deny the circular sign as it is not allowed, and approve the freestanding sign with the following condition: a.) Take down the banner and the circular sign. 4 Yea 0 Nea – Lip Yea, Burke Yea, Murphy Yea, Spadafora Yea 4.) The committee reviewed a sign application from Prime storage located at 9 Linehurst Rd. Anna Haulch was present. Motion was made by Barbara Murphy, seconded by Deborah Burke to approve this sign with the following conditions: A.) Apply for electrical permit. B.) Lights are to be turned off one hour after close of business. 4 Yea 0 Nea – Lip Yea, Burke Yea, Murphy Yea, Spadafora Yea 5.) The committee reviewed a sign application from Malden Gaming District located at the corner of Washington and Exchange Street. Kevin Duffy was present. Motion was made by Barbara Murphy, seconded by Yem Lip to approve this sign. Kevin Duffy will send an email to let the committee know when new names are being added to the sign. No SDR approval is needed as this is a reface of an existing sign and is being performed by the city, so it falls under a sign which is erected by a Government Agency and does not require SDR approval (Section 4.16.050) 4 Yea 0 Nea –Lip Yea, Burke Yea, Murphy Yea, Spadafora Yea 6.) The committee reviewed a sign application from HKHQ Services located at 58 Summer St. No one was present to represent this sign. Motion was made by Barbara Murphy, seconded by Deborah Burke to table this sign application. 4 Yea 0 Nea –Lip Yea, Burke Yea, Murphy Yea, Spadafora Yea Old Business: 1.) The committee reviewed a sign application from Cabinext USA Inc. located at 103 Commercial St. Business owner, Aliny was present. Motion was made by Deborah Burke, seconded by Barbara Murphy to approve this sign application with the following condition: a.
