TREE COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES APRIL 2, 2018 MEMBERS PRESENT: Cookie Friedrich, Pat Sagala, Janice Waterman, Bob Johnson, Sue Verheek, Gerald Haw MEMBERS EXCUSED: Pat Williams OTHERS PRESENT: Jeff Mikula– City of Manistee Kathie Boyle – City of Manistee Jim Smith, Mayor Roger Zielinski, Mayor Pro-Tem Meeting called to order at 5:00 p.m. by Chair Sagala. Motion by Johnson, second by Waterman to accept September 11, 2017 minutes and place on file. Motion carried. UNFINISHED BUSINESS DPW Forestry Work Mikula reported that the DPW has cut down approximately 50 trees and trimmed over 20 trees within the City limits. Tree Planting Program Per the advice of a tree planting contractor it was recommended to plant trees in the spring of the year instead of fall. Tree planting program has been advertised with the same selections and cost as last year, applications due by April 24th. Bidding also out for contractors to plant, bid to be received by April 10, 2018. 5th Avenue Beach Trees Many trees in this area have exceeded their life cycle and have been removed and stumps removed. Our plan is to topsoil and stabilize the soil while attempting to keep sand off this area, adding nutrients will help new trees grow. Type of trees to be planted in this area will be the Autumn Blaze Maple. Duffy Park Trees The city received a Consumer Energy Grant late last fall to plant trees in this area. Type of trees planted were the Autumn Blaze Maple. COMMENTS Mikula informed the commission that the white pine spruce tree planted by the DNR at First Street Beach near the concession stand did not survive. We will plant a smaller tree in this harsh environment. Pat Sagala welcomed our newest member Gerald Haw to the commission. Chalk Art Contest will be held Friday, June 29, 2018 at 5:00 p.m. Details will be discussed at our May meeting. Waterman stated that she has noticed many old trees needing to be removed. Possibly have to contract removal. Wood Policy discussed. Mayor Smith informed the commission of his public education broadcasts. Appreciates all those who serve on the board. He has noticed how trees by water shut off boxes. We do have rules on tree planting that states a new tree must be planted “at least 3 feet from driveways, sidewalks, street or cub line and water lines”. Mayor Pro-Tem Zielinski echoed Mayor Smith’s appreciation to the members and commend the commission for making the right decisions on behalf of the City of Manistee. There being no further business, Motion by Waterman, second by Friedrich to adjourn at 5:30 p.m. All in favor. Respectfully submitted, Kathie Boyle Recording Secretary
