TREE COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES AUGUST 6, 2018 MEMBERS PRESENT: Cookie Friedrich, Pat Sagala, Gerald Haw, Janice Waterman, Bob Johnson, Pat Williams MEMBERS EXCUSED: Sue Verheek OTHERS PRESENT: Kathie Boyle – City of Manistee Meeting called to order at 5:00 p.m. by Chair Sagala. CITIZEN/PUBLIC COMMENT None APPROVAL OF MINUTES Motion by Friedrich, second by Waterman to accept June 4, 2018 minutes and place on file. Motion carried. UNFINISHED BUSINESS Chalk Art Contest Contest had approximately 60 participants. Commission believes that weather and how July 4 fell this year could contribute to the lower number. NEW BUSINESS Pat Sagala notified the commission that she is stepping down as chair of the Tree Commission, she will continue to be on the commission as a member. Motion by Friedrich second by Williams to appoint Janice Waterman as the new chair. Board thanked Sagala for all her hard work over the past 10 years. COMMENTS Bushes in the right of way are becoming dangerous to the citizens/drivers; area of great concern is 8th & Kosciusko – hard to see the four-way stop sign also Pine & 1st Street. Members to write down any other areas they see that need to be trimmed and report back to the Department of Public Works. Commission believes it would be a great if Mikula could do an article on the 5th Avenue tree planting. Williams has discussed this with Ken Grabowski who is interested in doing the article. Tree located at Harbor Drive and driveway to Country Club needs trimming – branches are hanging out over the street. Eighteen tree removal/trimming applications were given to Waterman and Johnson for inspection. Willow tree by Lions Pavilion needs trimming also needs to be mowed, landscaped and weed whacked. Newly planted trees need to be water more frequently. There being no further business, Motion by Friedrich, second by Haw to adjourn at 5:30 p.m. All in favor.
