3. CITIZEN COMMENTS
Deputy City Manager Shelly Lanners congratulated the Board members who were
reappointed and thanked the Board for their dedication in supporting the Library. She
also thanked Steve Standefer for laying the foundation for the progress of the Library.
Mr. Standefer, retired MPL City Librarian, thanked Ms. Lanners for her relentless
advocacy for the Library.
4. FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY UPDATE
Friends’ President, Shelley Daunis provided the update. The Friends of MPL applied
for Hotel / Motel Occupancy Tax funds by submitting data from Mansfield Reads 2019
and were awarded $5,000 to promote Mansfield Reads 2020.
Mansfield Methodist contacted the Friends of MPL to be a part of their NICU Reunion
which has a Dr. Seuss theme. It is scheduled for Saturday, September 21, 2019, from
10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Youth Services Librarian Julie Crisafulli is doing a Story Time.
The Friends were also contacted by Frost Bank to design a table for Table Scapes.
Frost Bank agreed to support Mansfield Reads with a $1,000 donation.
In preparation for North Texas Giving Day, Thursday, September 19, 2019, a signup
sheet to donate at a specific time of the day to qualify the Friends for hourly bonus
prizes was circulated. Board members were encouraged to sign up at a specific time
slot if they were planning on donating. Board members were also asked to sign up to
staff a table inside the Library on North Texas Giving Day. Mayor David Cook will be
reading stories during Bilingual Story Time at 10:30 a.m. that morning. Scheduled
giving started on September 9.

The Friends will be doing a Facebook Live book reveal for the Mansfield Reads 2020
book on September 25, 2019. Preliminary planning has already begun as the Friends
think about READS 2021.
5. DIRECTOR OF LIBRARY SERVICES REPORT
Director of Library Services Yolanda Botello provided the update. Ms. Botello was
present at the 3CMA Conference in Denver, CO where the Mansfield Public Library
placed 3rd for the Savvy Award (award of excellence) out of 700 entries in 25
categories for the 2018 Turkey Palooza program.
The third reading of the 2020 City budget was approved and includes the Library
expansion. This will add 4,000 square feet to the back of the Library building with an
enclosed children’s area, a new programing area, a family bathroom, and an additional
office. The allocated budget will be combined with the bond money ($1.5 million) from
2004 for a total of $2.5 million.
A library tech truck was also funded, which includes the cost of the vehicle,
customization, and wrapping for $91,000. The Friends previously pledged $10,000 that
will be used to help outfit the truck. The truck is based on the Plano Public Library
truck, which has a bubble machine, awning with TV, generator, and storage.
The Library will be reclassifying four of the frozen part-time positions into a
professional Community Engagement Librarian. This librarian will drive the truck, take
services outside of the Library, and do community outreach. Current Library staff will
also do cross-training for use of the vehicle.
Overall, the Library operating budget only went up about $500, which is consistent with
previous years.
Separately, the Museum received budget approval for foundation and roof repairs. The
Man House also received budget approval, with phases 1 and 2 to be complete by
February 2020. Phases 3 and 4 will include a small information center.
“Turkey Palooza”, Saturday, November 9, 2019, planning is underway. The date having
already been publicized in print, unfortunately, is the same day as the Veterans Day
Parade; City Council members may not be able to participate in “Turkey Palooza”
2019 in the same manner as in 2018.
6. OLD BUSINESS
Maggie Martin asked if the Library Needs sheet the Board previously created is still
valid. The group agreed that the needs are still applicable and are good talking points.
7. NEW BUSINESS
Ms. Botello shared that the Library’s new website could launch by the end of
September. Official individual photos are needed of newer Library Advisory Board
members, Maggie Martin and Richard Ajenikoko, as well as an updated group photo of
the full Library Advisory Board. Ms. Botello will determine if pictures can be taken at
one of the next Board meetings.
