Absent: 1- Elaine Lancaster

MOTION by Vice-Chair O'Hara, seconded by Member Rakestraw, to approve the

(4) STAFF COMMUNICATIONS
a. City's Beach Stewardship Program
Ms. Malloy is absent for today's meeting. Vice-Chair O'Hara reported the next Beach
Stewardship program scheduled January, 2017.
b. Beach Schedule Updates
Next beach clean up scheduled Friday evening, November 4, 2016 at South Beach from
5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. At their request, sponsored by Optimist Club. Start time moving
to 5:00 p.m.- 5:30 p.m.
Member Ferrara reported general conditions of the beach. An increase in dead birds due
to red tide with a minor spike in trash due to season arriving. Nest will be excavated to
determine any unhatched eggs, approximately 50 hatchlings. Another nest (scheduled to
hatch near Oct. 31st) located near the Collier County at South Beach. Adjacent
condominiums will be notified to adjust light restrictions for the hatching. An injured
laughing gull found on the beach was transported to the Von Arx Wildlife Hospital.
(5) COMMITTEE COMMUNICATIONS
a. Plastic Straws on beach
Vice-Chair O'Hara reported 60 volunteers turned out for last beach clean up which was a

huge improvement with less plastic straws. Only one bag was collected with the majority
being biodegradable.
b. Beach Clean up T-Shirt
Member McCann advised the lighter weight, moisture wicking t-shirts were ordered with a
three (3) week delivery date.
c. Beach Education Outreach
Vice-Chair O'Hara commented on October 5, 2016 presentation to 35 junior gardeners
from Calusa Garden Club. Included was "8 Ways to help our Beach" program. New
brochures were handed out, added additional information on the back thanking Marco
Island Yoga for their donation and support.
Member Lamb suggested taking the program on the road.
Member Rakestraw questioned if a presentation is available for adults. It was decided the
program could be revised to include an adult version.
Public Comment:
Nick Wagner, Director of Recreation with Marco Island Marriott Beach and Resort,
offered his sponsorship to the Beach Education Program.
d. Goals 2016 - Progress/Status
No report.
e. Budget - 2016/2017
Vice-Chair O'Hara stated quotes were submitted to Ms. Malloy for signage for the Meet &
Greet event.
f. October 5th Presentation for Jr. Gardeners

(6) OLD BUSINESS
a. South Beach Shadow Box Repair
Chair Burson stated the shadow box was repaired by Barry Williams and staff with Collier
County Parks and Recreation. Member McCann stated landscaping at South Beach will
be completed before season.
(7) NEW BUSINESS
a. Meet & Greet
Vice-Chair O"Hara gave Ms Malloy an outline list for Meet & Greet and will forward to
committee members.

Nick Wagner, Director of Recreation with Marco Island Marriott Beach and Resort,
commented they are partnering with members from Audubon to have lobby delighters
once a week to interact with guests for educational purposes beginning November 1,
2016. Vice-Chair O'Hara will share the "8 Ways to help our Beach" program with Nick
Wagner for the Marriott's kids program.
