The City encourages those who wish to observe the meeting to do so through the broadcast on cable TV or the City website (www.cityofmarcoisland.com). If you choose to attend the meeting in person, you are required to maintain social distancing. All persons entering the building will receive a health screening consisting of a temperature check and COVID-19 related questions. (1) CALL TO ORDER Vice Chair Eastman called the meeting to order at 9:00 A.M. (2) ROLL CALL Present: 4- Member Barber, Vice-Chair Eastman, Member O'Donnell and Member Ryan Not Present: 1- Member Scarpa (3) PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE Led by Vice-Chair Eastman (4) INTRODUCTION OF NEW BchCRAC MEMBERS: JIM SCARPA, LINDA RYAN AND PAT BARBER Tonia Selmeski Introduced 2 new members to the Beach and Coastal Resources Advisory Committee. Member Ryan indicated that she has a background in Sedimentary Geology. She grew up in Massachusetts and spent Summers on Cape Cod she saw a lot of similarities and that’s what made her love Marco Island. She majored in Geology and went on to a career with IVM but maintained her love for Beaches. Member Barber indicated she has been a resident on Marco Island for 20 years. She has always had a love affair with anything Coastal. She retired and decided it was a perfect opportunity to get involved with the Beach and Coastal Environment. (5) ELECTION OF CHAIR AND VICE-CHAIR Present: 5- Member Barber, Vice-Chair Eastman, Member Ganem, Member O'Donnell and Member Ryan Not Present: 1- Member Scarpa Vice-Chair Esatman outlined the nomination process and opened the floor for nominations for Chair of the Beach and Coastal Resources Advisory Committee. Vice-Chair Eastman nominated member O'Donnell as Chair of the Beach and Coastal Resources Advisory Committee. No other nominations for Chair were advanced. No public comments were received. No other nominations for Chair were advanced. No public comments were received. MOTION CARRIED BY THE FOLLOWING VOTE: Yes: 4- Member Barber, Vice-Chair Eastman, Member O'Donnell and Member Ryan City of Marco Island Florida Page 2 Beach and Coastal Resources Meeting Minutes - Final March 17, 2021 Advisory Committee Not Present: 1- Member Scarpa (8) STAFF COMMUNICATIONS Tonia Selmeski communicated information to the Committee regarding the Sunshine Law training. She also included a discussion on guidelines when providing presentations either for a Committee member or someone from the public. There was a discussion on the Gopher Tortoise survey program. (9) PUBLIC COMMENT (TIME CERTAIN 9:30 A.M.) None. (10) PRESENTATIONS None. (11) OLD BUSINESS None. (12) NEW BUSINESS ID 21-1437 FY21 Committee Budget & Balance remaining The Beach and Coastal Resources Advisory Committee members had a discussion on the FY21 Committee Budget & Balance remaining. Tonia Selmeski updated the Committee members on the remaining balance for the remainder of the year. She went over some of the spending's that were made. Gopher Tortoise Proclamation Tonia Selmeski had a discussion with the Committee regarding Gopher Tortoise Proclamation Day. She mentioned that the City has put up a trailer to notify the public to drive slowly and that it is Gopher Tortoise day to protect Gopher Tortoise. They will do some outreach on the City of Marco Facebook page. Vice-Chair Eastman mentioned that they should ask the City Council to do the Proclamation to have some members available. Member Ryan mentioned that it was a great idea and in future years they can think about how they can support the day. Beach and Coastal Resources Advisory 2021 Beach Goals There was a discussion on the Beach and Coastal Resources Advisory 2021 Beach Goals. Vice-Chair Eastman proposed to have the discussion for the following meeting so they can look at the goals and concentrate on what they want to do for the next year since so many things have changed due to COVID and now they have new members. (13) COMMITTEE COMMUNICATIONS City of Marco Island Florida Page 3 Beach and Coastal Resources Meeting Minutes - Final March 17, 2021 Advisory Committee Vice-Chair Eastman discussed the straw problem at the beach. Beach and Coastal Resources Advisory Committee discussed the meeting schedule and decided they will keep the bi-monthly meetings. Next Beach clean up will be March 27th.
