August 2021 Staff Report ID 21-1727 August 2021 Staff Report Parks, Culture & Recreation Manager Samantha Malloy shared that summer camp was a success, although closed for a week due to COVID-19. She stated the numbers allowed for summer camp were lower than in past years, but there were weeks the camp reached eighty children. Vice-Chair Richards questioned the status of the shade structures. Facilities Supervisor Martha Montgomery stated the permit is approved with a delivery time of four to six City of Marco Island Florida Page 1 Parks and Recreation Advisory Meeting Minutes - Final August 17, 2021 Committee weeks. Additionally, Chair Portu requested the status of the Veterans' Community Park Gazebo relocation. Mrs. Montgomery stated she had received estimates to build a new concrete slab for the Gazebo. Manhattan Construction Group will assist with dissembling the structure, and the Public Works department will assist with reassembling the Gazebo. Mrs. Malloy stated the Gazebo has a location at Leigh Plummer Park. Vice-Chair Richards complemented the efforts made at the dog park with the spread-out benches and added trees. Vice-Chair Richards stated the entrance to the dog park has become muddy, of which Mrs. Montgomery stated the idea is to put down pavers to prevent further mud development. Mrs. Malloy relayed that the 2021-2022 Farmers Market vendor application is available on the city website, stating the market will be at Mackle Park, reducing the number of vendors accepted. The market will run similar to last season at Mackle Park with a start date of November 17, 2021. Chair Portu announced the groundbreaking of Veterans' Community Park to be held Wednesday, August 18, 2021. Chair Portu and Mrs. Malloy welcomed Committee Members and the public to join the exciting event. (7) PUBLIC COMMENT None. (8) PRESENTATIONS None. (9) OLD BUSINESS Member Siegel questioned the donation status of the Marco Island Community Park Foundation towards Veterans' Community Park. Answering, Chair Portu stated the Foundation had received several donations but was not sure if an agreement had been established to specifically allocate the funds towards Veterans' Community Park capital or reserves. Chair Portu asked for the status of the Racquet Center, citing the budget request sent to City Council to resurface court one into a permanent pickleball court. Mrs. Malloy confirmed the resurfacing was still in the budget at that time. a. Food Forest Discussion Vice-Chair Richards briefly highlighted the July 20, 2021 presentation from Food Forest Abundance. She volunteered to contact Florida Gulf Coast University to inquire about the possibility of starting an internship that would create a design project for Calusa Park and the existing Fruit Trees. (10) NEW BUSINESS Member Siegel asked for an update on the Youth Council, to which Vice-Chair Richards replied that the Youth Council had dissipated due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Chair Portu stressed the importance of starting a planning process for a new location, citing Leigh City of Marco Island Florida Page 2 Parks and Recreation Advisory Meeting Minutes - Final August 17, 2021 Committee Plummer Park or Calusa Park. Chair Portu requested a format be developed that will address a five-to-ten-year plan with financing options, stating this format can be utilized to maintain organization for additional park property development. Chair Portu asked for the discussion to continue on September 21, 2021, at the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee meeting with Mr. Daniel Smith, Community Affairs Director. Mrs. Malloy replied that parking at Leigh Plummer Park is a current project that will require input from the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee. Mrs. Malloy briefly highlighted the Mackle Park Basketball Court airnasium is deteriorating, stating that basketball, special events, and meetings utilize the court. Chair Portu inquired if there was an additional function that would benefit from having a new airnasium and explained preserving the airnasium would be an option to evaluate first. Vice-Chair Richards recommended cost comparisons of repair versus constructing a new airnasium. (11) COMMITTEE COMMUNICATIONS None.
