The City Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, assembled on April
27, 2015 at 5:30 P.M. to tour the Westside area neighborhoods prior to their
quarterly Neighborhood Focus Meeting scheduled for April 27, 2015 at 7:30pm
at Albert Harris School, 710 Smith Road.
Council Members present for the tour included: Mayor Danny Turner,
Vice Mayor Jennifer Bowles, Mark Stroud, Gene Teague and Sharon Brooks
Hodge. Others present included: Leon Towarnicki, Andy Powers, Coretha
Gravely, Wayne Knox, Martinsville Bulletin reporter, two Carlisle High School
international students and one citizen.
Attendees looked at several houses on Wray Street, Top Street,
Roundabout Road, Second Street, Kathern Street, and Smith Street scheduled
for demolition, observed a number of areas along Wray Street and Pine Hall
Road where illegal dumping was occurring, visited West End Park on Cardinal
Lane, visited and discussed the Paradise Inn on Fayette Street, looked at
development occurring at Academy Place and discussed available building lots,
and looked at People’s Cemetery at the end of Second Street.

Nuisance Ordinance-37 Notices of violation were issued this period.
Property Maintenance- 35 Property Maintenance notices were
issued.
Demolitions- The notices of demolition have been sent to the owners
of record and published in the Bulletin. May 18 is the deadline to turn
in Plans of Action. One property has been demolished by the owner.
The Property Maintenance/Fire Inspections offices works diligently to
address all citizen concerns in a timely manner unless there are
occurrences where the Property Maintenance/Fire Inspector has to
address fire and arson issues which then take priority. The office may
be reached at 403-5205 and is located in Room 217 on the second
floor of the Municipal Building.

Demolitions
Demolition orders have been mailed and published in the Bulletin. After the May 18, 2015
deadline, our office will begin the bid process on the remaining structures.
