Public Art Master Plan update Consultant Julia Dixon is in discussion with a graphic designer who was recommended by a committee member for designing the final master plan. A draft of the plan will be shared with the committee by the end of January. The committee will discuss the draft at their February meeting and provide feedback to finalize the plan in March. This is a Page 1 of 2 Public Art Committee Minutes – January 11, 2024 slight adjustment from the original timeline for the master plan. Julia identified several categories that capture the ideas shared on vision and values. Those include engagement, arts and culture, tourism, infrastructure, and identity. Engagement was the most popular topic, followed by identity. The committee agreed engagement should stay a value as it will always be an essential part of the work that they do, but the vision should be more broad and nebulous. The vision statement they agreed on is: We would like to see a future in which Merriam can be identified by its arts and culture. The committee then discussed the process for procuring art and what should be included in the master plan. The master plan should be flexible to accommodate changing members, budget, and priorities. The committee values having a transparent, democratic process and recognizes how all residents have the opportunity to serve on the committee or attend meetings. The master plan will include a toolkit that guides the committee on how to do the work itself. The committee believes some smaller projects could be achieved on their own. Committee management could be an easier path for working with new artists or community groups. The committee also recognizes the value of hiring a consultant as needed to provide professional expertise and project management to achieve goals faster. Vetting artists’ abilities is a particularly challenging task. Larger budget projects would benefit from a consultant. The master plan will also include guidelines for hiring a consultant. 2. Other Business A presentation shared by a resident will be shared with all committee members for possible discussion at the February meeting. Chair Phil Lammers announced his resignation from the committee. The committee thanked Phil for his service and wished him the best. Committee members interested in serving as chair are asked to contact the Mayor. V. ADJOURNMENT There being no other items to consider, the meeting was adjourned at 6:38 p.m. Page 2 of 2
