ADJOURNMENT MINUTES Public Art Committee Meeting City of Merriam, Kansas Merriam Visitors Bureau, 6304 E. Thursday, October 9, 2025 5:30 PM Frontage Road I. CALL TO ORDER Chair Shawn McConnell called the meeting to order at 5:32 p.m. II. ROLL CALL Committee Members Present: Staff Present: Jan Schoonover Dave Smothers, Assistant Director Parks and Jordan Gomez Recreation Julie Denesha Shawn McConnell Jason Silvers Vanessa Chasm Committee Members Absent: Staci Chivetta Gerald Becker Christine Nelson Maggie McConnell III. ACTION ITEMS 1. Consider approval of the September 11, 2025 Public Art Committee minutes. Shawn brought a correction of the September 11 meeting minutes to reflect the changing of the word "establishing" to the word "update" as it pertains to the status of a 1% for art on all development within the city. IV. PROJECT UPDATES 1. Review samples for City Hall window project Page 1 of 2 Public Art Committee Minutes – October 9, 2025 Staff provided the committee with two different window art samples. One was samples on mylar and the other was samples "ready to stick" The committee thought that these samples were great and approved of them. 2. Possible ribbon ceremony cutting for "Grow Together" and "Seasons Steps' The committee discussed the ribbon cutting ceremony for "Grow Together" and "Seasons Steps" for Friday October 24 anytime from 4:30pm-6:00pm. The artists had suggested that they might be able to attend. It was suggested that we invite the library. Staff was directed to check with Karen about the date, time, and borrowing the giant scissors and ribbon. 3. Discuss next project - Butterfly Garden Area on Streamway Trail The committee discussed the next art project. After reviewing the butterfly garden area but not limiting to other areas along the streamway trail, the sculpture or 3D piece will need to be durable, sturdy and easy to maintain. The Committee would like to see a creative, interactive piece that might be able to be climbed on. When building the RFP there should be a specific scope with the overall project not to exceed $200,000 with travel expenses for the artists. The top 3 finalists will come in person for an interview. 4. City Updates City Birthday Party - Thursday October 23 from 4-8PM Merriam Grand Market has broken ground and is going vertical. Anticipated opening Fall 2026. Election Day is Tuesday November 4. 5. Other items from the floor Committee member Schoonover made a request for Cara's email. Staff followed up with this request.Councilman Silvers brought in some ceramic art pieces to share with the committee. V.
