THE COUNCIL MAY DISCUSS, CONSIDER, AND VOTE ON ANY ITEM IN THIS AGENDA: Call to Order Schultz called the meeting to order at 4:04 PM. Public Input and Unscheduled Personal Appearances None. Consent Agenda: By unanimous consent the public body may designate noncontroversial items to be considered in one motion and one vote. The public body may add items from the regular agenda and approve. Posted agenda items not added to the consent docket will be considered separately in their regular order. Staff recommends that Items 4 and 5 be placed on the consent agenda. Trussler moved to approve Item #4 (Minutes for December 2017 Special Meeting) and Item #5 (Claims: $55,536.02). Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd will grace the screen the Coleman in March and April, as Dennis James, the master of “The Mighty Wurlitzer” pipe organ, brings a Keaton double feature in March and returns in April with his Musica Curiosa show featuring the always funny Lloyd. “I don’t know which silent film event I am more excited about,” said Shannon Duhon, managing director of the Coleman Theatre. “Keaton and Lloyd two of my favorites and are sure to be a treat for the audience. Combined with James, the official house organist of the Coleman Theatre, these two events will be filled with laughs and great entertainment.” ‘THE BLACKSMITH’ ‘THE CAMERAMAN’ 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 17, 2018 2:30 p.m. Sunday, March 18, 2018 Dennis James brings to the Coleman Theatre a pair of Buster Keaton comedies, the first, “The Blacksmith,” is a short comedy co-written and co-directed by Keaton. In the film, Keaton plays an assistant blacksmith to the burly worker played by a Keaton acting company favorite, the big Joe Roberts, with predictable results. The second film, “The Camerman,” directed by Edward Sedgwick, was Keaton’s first film with Metro- Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) and is considered by fans and critics to be Keaton still in top form. Within a little over a year, however, MGM would take away Keaton’s creative control over his pictures, causing drastic and long-lasting harm to his career. “Keaton would later call the move away from his own production company to work for major studio MGM the worst mistake of his career.” James said. “This particular movie was added to the National Film Registry in 2005 as being culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.” MUSICA CURIOUSA 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 21, 2018 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 22, 2018 103 N. The first part of the program will feature a concert of South American salon music from Brazil and Argentina, followed be the always funny Harold Lloyd in “Why Worry?” “Containing more gags per minute than any of his other features, ‘Why Worry?’ is one of Harold Lloyd’s funniest films,” James said. “With the barest of plots, Lloyd and his writers came up with every possible gag one could use in a South American setting and then threw an actual giant into the fray to make things even more insane.” Lloyd plays Harold van Pelham, a wealthy hypochondriac who is ordered by his doctors -- in an effort to get rid of him -- to travel to a warm climate. With his manservant and beautiful private nurse in tow, van Pelham heads South to the Isle of Paradiso. Little realizing that Paradiso is in the middle of a revolution, van Pelham misunderstands the goings on, believing the townspeople are just being friendly. “All the elements are all there for one gag after another and, in true Harold Lloyd fashion, each gag builds upon the other, making ‘Why Worry?’ still as funny today as when it was first released,” James said. Please save this to your calendar. Barbara Smith Consulting Report January-Februay 2018 This time period was focused on promotion and planning for the shows the last of this year and for next year. The FOC newsletter was completed featuring the 89-year history of the Coleman as presenting great entertainment for the four-state area and to advertising in depth all of the shows for the remainder of this fiscal year. We are still waiting to hear if the Oklahoma Arts Council has approved our grant request for “Rock Legends” this April. It has been a few weeks, but we had not heard as of last week. Then attention turned toward selecting the title of the silent movies for the following fiscal year and that has been done. We are very excited about featuring a newly restored silent movie, “Rin Tin Tin,” and featuring the dog theme both there and in the following production which is a classic “A Dog’s Life” comedy and one other show. Shannon has some great ideas about promotions in conjunction with the Animal Shelter. Then Dennis does the third show with fabulous pianist, Michael Tsalsa of Spain (this is one that is a good possible choice for wiring a grant.) We have a tentative contract, which may be finalized this week, for the “Red Dirt Rangers,” a very popular Oklahoma group from the list of sponsored shows put out by the Oklahoma Arts Council. The show is very reasonable. This is a show the audiences should enjoy and turn out for on Aug. 4, 2018. Another show we are considering and have explored is a production of “Elvis and Johnny” with two singers and musicians portraying Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash. One has played in Branson for over six years a while back as Elvis and the other has also played there and toured extensively as Cash. They come highly recommended. We continue to explore areas for improvement to the facility and to the functioning of the theatre. Shannon is preparing a list of the people who pledged but have not completed and I will call them and try to get the books cleared up as soon as possible. We are also looking at some things that Friends can do to assist with some of the smaller projects and appreciate their ongoing efforts to help in any way they can. Their financial assistance has made a big difference this year! Things are looking good for another excellent year and one of the areas I am exploring is requesting permission from the Walton Foundation to submit a proposal for a grant to help fund next year’s full season. A letter must be written to ask and explain our position before they will invite a grant proposal. We can hope we are asked! Barbara Smith
