Commission Meeting
Minutes – June 12, 2014
The meeting came to order at 5:35 p.m. Attendees included commission members: Beth Pishkar, Sharon Carnes, Kathy
Dennis, Faye Moore, Deborah Chubb and Guest: Joan Ganschow
The May Minutes were approved unanimously by voice vote.
Kathy Dennis provided a financial report: No change in the bank balance from last month - $358
Kathy provided an update on the fundraiser, Celebrating Women in the Arts:
Bunny Fisher will not be able to participate in the program. However, several very talented local performing
artist have agreed to participate, including Lady Sax, Soul Steppers and several other poets and singers.
The next meeting for the event committee will be on June 19th at Noon at Cabo’s
Several food donors have been secured. Any information on food donations should be sent to Deb Chubb at
deborahchubb@live.com
Ivy Tech will provide students to help with the food set-up, maintenance, table-bussing and clean-up.
The draft of the invitations should be ready by 6/19
OLD BUSINESS:
The group discussed the progress of the mentoring program being led by Evolve 7. Kay was not in attendance,
so the questions were left to the next meeting.
Kathy discussed an article about research concerning high school drop-outs. She’ll forward it to the group.
Sharon reported on a meeting she had with Audra Peterson, Director of the Career Tech Center. Audra would
like us to help with an event for 8th graders to visit the CTC by finding women speakers from non-traditional jobs. They’d
also like us to provide a pizza lunch for the event. The group was asked to submit names of potential speakers along
with their contact information to Sharon Carnes. Blair Milo was suggested as a keynote speaker.
The group was encouraged to attend United Way’s Community Conversation on Wednesday, June 18th, 7:30 am
– 10:30 am. At Blue Chip.
Kathy Dennis discussed a grant opportunity with the National Endowment for the Arts of Northwest Indiana.
She suggested that we might be able to get funding to support an art project with our high school mentees. The grant
application is due in January, 2015 and can be for up to $5,000.
Faye invited the group to attend a fundraiser, Steppers’ Ball, to benefit the NAACP on June 21st at the Senior
Center.
Deb Chubb invited the group to participate in two fundraisers for Imagination Station – a Car Wash on June 14th
and a Garage Sale on June 28th. Both at Imagination Station. Donations of items to sell at the garage were encouraged.
The meeting adjourned at 6:35p.m.
