1 MINUTES OF MICHIGAN CITY COMMISSION FOR WOMEN MEETING Tuesday, September 25, 2018 at 4:30 p.m. EOC Room in City Hall Call to Order: Kathy Dennis called the meeting to order at 4:40 pm. Present were Commissioners Jo Ann Engquist, Dalia Zygas, Kathy Dennis, Faye Moore, Kay Hill, Bonita Schaaf and City Council Liaison Pat Boy. Absent were Sharlene Livesay, Albertine Allen, Kristina Isabelle. Approval of Minutes of the Prior Meeting: Minutes of the August 16, 2018 meeting were reviewed with motion to approve by Engquist, second by Hill. Motion carried. Treasurer’s Report: No report available. Old Business: Discussion of Homelessness in Michigan City. Commissioners discussed contacting an agency in Chicago for ideas about the best policies for working with the homeless, including offering local business owners de-escalation training. New Business: Request for Donation. Deborah Chubb made a presentation on behalf of “You Should Run, Woman” for a Request for Donation for the “Get Out the Vote Festival” on October 27, 2018. The festival will be held at the You Are Beautiful sculpture next to City Hall. They are requesting $500.00 out of total project expenses of more than $2,200.00. The $500 requested will cover expenses of printing, giveaway bags, or paper products. Engquist made the motion “I move we accept the proposal for $500.00 for the Get Out the Vote Festival sponsored by You Should Run, Woman”. Second by Moore. Motion passed, with abstentions by Zygas and Schaaf. Since “You Should Run, Woman” is not a Section 501©(3) not-for-profit, the League of Women Voters will serve as fiscal agent to receive and disburse the $500 donation. Commissioners’ Comments: Discussed the importance of registering voters. Council Liaison’s Comments: None. Adjournment: Meeting adjourned at 4:50 pm. Our next meeting is October 18, 2018.
