MINUTES OF MICHIGAN CITY COMMISSION FOR WOMEN MEETING
Thursday, November 21, 2019 at 5:00 p.m.
West Conference Room in City Hall
I. Call to Order: Dalia called the meeting to order at 5:02 pm.
Present were Commissioners Dalia Zygas, Bonnie Schaaf, Kristina Isabelle, Sharlene
Livesay, Nicole Florek, Faye Moore, Albertine Allen, City Council Liaison Sean Fitz-
patrick.
Absent: Jo Ann Engquist, Kay Hill
II. Approval of Minutes of the Prior Meeting: Minutes from September meeting were
incomplete. Isabelle forgot to include Commissioner Schaaf update on the Centennial
program. Motion to table minutes until next meeting. 1st Livesay and 2nd Florek
Motion passed
III. Treasurer’s Report: Reminder to have the awardees com back and give us a re-
port on their event or program. Motion to approve Schaaf, second: Livesay Motion
passed
IV. Grant Requests
a) Proposed Change to procedures: Dalia drafted a new document to help the com-
mission on ranking a project for funding. So as not to discuss in front of applicant
and to be able to give feedback to the applicant. Need to amend and add a line that
asks for amount requested on application form.
b) Foster- Golden JazzFest Application: Ester Golden presented the proposal for fund-
ing to support the 1st JazzNest Fest with a full day of programing at the First
Presbyterian Church on Nov. 30th. Th event includes the history of Jazz and three
musical acts and refreshments for free. Since no total request amount was listed on
application and Commission noted that the application form needs to be changed to
include a place to put in funding amount. The request amount is for $500.
V. Old Business
a) Women in the Arts event: We need to continue to find another date for the
fundraiser as Dalia brought up we have been very generous and we need to make
sure we are able to continue to support programs. March seems to be a good time
since we will be unveiling a lot of programs for the Centennial events.
b) Womens Suffrage Commemoration: Bonnie Schaaf presents *see attached
document for proposed programs and timeline. Proposal for a brochure for the
commission events for the month. Giveaways for various events- tote bag, pens,
wrist bands, etc. *See attached sheet with ideas and websites to order.
-Poster and Essay contest This will require a sub-committee to help support Faye
and Bonnie. Check with the Human Rights Commission on their guidelines, time-
lines and prizes. Check with Joann on the roots of this contest idea.
Possibilities to collaborate with Barker Mansion on a few events as well as the MC
Public Library.
VI. New Business:
a) International Womens Day 2020 In March Create a month long program in collabo-
ration with Ester Golden and the Nest. Every Sunday events in regards to Suffrage
and the history of the ratification of women’s right to vote. Proposed programs to be
determined may include: Tributes and the history, Music Protest songs, Laura Scrug-
gs documentary film maker and sharing films, comedy event.
VII. Public Comments: None
IX. Council Liaison Comments: Sean informed the commission that the ordinance to
include a Treasurer was approved and ordinance has been amended.
IIX. Commissioners Comments: Nominating committee to help with the transition to
the new position for December meeting. Faye, Joann and Dalia to call commissioners
prior to January meeting.
Acknowledge the amazing work that Bonnie is putting into programming.
Dalia - There is a call for people to be involved in a Scream photoshoot for a Lubeznik
work.
Motions to adjourn meeting Livesay and second Allen. Meeting adjourned 6:14pm
