Human Rights Department MISSION STATEMENT: To identify and recommend public remedies to increase, broaden and improve the economic, educational, social and professional status of the African-American male locally. CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order at approximately 12:04 pm by Commissioner Arthur Payne, Jr. ROLL CALL: Commissioner W. Faye Moore called the roll - Minutes reflect attendance and absences. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Motion made by Commissioner Willie Milsap to accept the minutes as presented. Motion seconded by Commissioner Nila Williams. There was no discussion. Motion carried and passed. OLD BUSINESS: a. African Garden – Follow-up has been done by Commissioner Moore, still pending further instructions from Beachside and International Botanical Gardens. An application had to be presented to the Board at International Friendship Gardens. b. Scholarship - Commissioner Moore will follow-up with a Press Release. c. Gary Commission - The Gary Commission focus is on Re-Entry and they have been offering classes through the Indiana Plan. Commissioner Moore forwarded the flier late June. 1 Commissioner Rev. Dennis Carroll - Question? Who is in charge of the Eastport Neighborhood Association? We are having a problem getting the Southgate Neighborhood Association going. ANSWER: First Ward Councilman Bryant Dabney is the President of the Eastport Neighborhood Association. Eastport Neighborhood Association meets the second (2nd) Thursday of the Month at the Michigan City Police Station Community Room, which is off Cleveland Avenue at 6:00 p.m. NEW BUSINESS: Commissioner Moore reminded the Commission that we have supported the Michigan City Back to School Rally and it is coming up on August 9th. Motion was made to continue to support the Michigan City Back to School Rally in the amount of $250, by Commissioner Nila Williams and seconded by Commissioner Willie Milsap. Discussion. Motion passed. During the discussion questions were asked about what we will be distributing and whether or not the banner will be ready. Commissioner Faye Moore will follow-up with the Treasurer, Commissioner Marty Corley. Commissioner Joan Ganschow will follow up on whether James Garrett, State Executive Director of the Social Status Commission will be attending. He usually attends and brings items from the State Commission. ROUNDTABLE and/or COMMITTEE REPORTS: Com missioner Milsap – (Economic Chair) Question to Mr. Ridle and Pastor Carnes….”What is the update with Reith & Reily?” Commissioner Carnes stated that at the Board of Works meeting Reith & Reily were not fined and are still receiving contracts from the City of Michigan City. Commissioner Rev. Dennis Carroll: (Human Rights Department) Rev. Carroll stated that he was voted in as President of the Ministerial Conference that meets at St. John’s United Church and they are supporting the Back to School Rally. Commissioner Lester Norvell :( Probation) No comment (I am waiting on the fire- works to stop) Commissioner Joan Ganschow:(Criminal Justice Chair and Vice Chair) Indiana Criminal Justice Association held their Northwest District Conference at Blue Chip and will be hosting their State Conference at Blue Chip October 2-5, 2018 and you can register on line www.indianacriminaljusticeassociation.org (They have been “Serving the Criminal Justice Field since 1933.”) Commissioner Rae Isbell – (H.O.P.E.) The celebration for Becky Williams was successful. There will be a follow-up meeting July 17, 2018 at 5:00 p.m. at H.O.P.E. TREASURER’S REPORT Balance 6/25/18 $14,499.03 2 Pending transactions: MC Soul Steppers Taste of MC Performance: - $2,500.00 Westside Reunion - 150.00 MC Human Rights Luncheon - 250.00 TOTAL: $10,599.03 + Commissioner Marty Corley: (Neighborhoods/Treasurer) This year’s Youth Leadership Academy was the best. Forty-two signed up and 35 graduated from the academy. This was the best class in attitude and workmanship. Commissioner Rev. Damon Carnes: (Ministers) August 26, 2018 there will be several churches coming together for worship service at 11:00 a.m. At this time there are seven (7) at Redeemed Fellowship Church on Pahs Road in Michigan City (Near the High School). We will have worship service, singing and communion for all. This will be a day of fellowship and GET OUT & vote. There will be no charge for the attendees; the churches are sharing the cost of the event. Commissioner Nila Williams (Health/City Council Appointment) Nila stated that she spoke at the youth leadership academy. Health Linc will be having an event on July 31, 2018 from 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. There will be wellness checks for adults and children. There will be give a-ways. Also there will be navigators on site if you DO NOT HAVE INSURANCE. The fees are according to your income (sliding scale). Please bring an ID if you want to be seen by a doctor. Plenty of prizes and give a-ways, and games. Commissioner W. Faye Moore (NAACP/Education Chair) Regular NAACP Membership meeting is the 4th Thursday of the month at IVTECH at 6:30 p.m. Membership is only $30.00 for adults for a whole year. Youth ages 13-18 is $10 without Crisis magazine and $15.00 with Crisis Magazine (digital). The 7th Annual Freedom Fund Ball will be Saturday, August 18, 2018 at Washington Park Senior Center. Doors open at 6:00 p.m.-midnight. Advance tickets $15/person $25/couple AT DOOR $20/person –no discount for couples. NOTE: Michigan City Commission of Social Status of African-American Males made the donation to the M. C. Soul Steppers of $2,500 and not the City.
