Roll Call Commissioner La’Tonya Troutman called the roll and the above minutes reflects attendance. We had our quorum of 10. Approval of Minutes. Motion to approve minutes moved by by Pastor Carroll Seconded by Tony Cox Treasurer's Report • See attached Treasurer Report • Motion to accept the treasurer's report with the ending balance of 5025.15 by Mr. Milsap • Seconded by Mr. Cox o I’s 10 o Nay’s 0 Guest Speaker • Dominic Edwards NWI2050 plan in final development. Transportation planning for 2050 working across the region to improve transportation around the Region. Plan would be presented at open house on April 24, at Ivy Tech.  Nominating Committee • The city Council is asking the MCSSFAAM to appoint a Youth to the Youth Council Leadership, implemented by Sean Fitzpatrick.Nominee presented at the May 8th City Council Meeting.Education Committee will address this issue. Faye Moore is Chair over Education. New Business • Sponsorship to Basketball Camp by Jared Jones. o 100 per person. Request for commission to sponsor 5 youth to attend LTG Summer Basketball Camp. o Commissioner Felice Motioned to approve sponsorship of 5 youth to basketball camp for a total of $500.00. Camp will be located at Michigan City High School. o Seconded by Tony Cox. o I’s 10 o Nay’s 0 • Annual Report o Annual Report is needed to go to city council. Committees need to send their report to Secretary ms.ltroutman@live.com. Old Business • Black Barbershop Initiative o Post Tribune Black Barbershop Initiative posted a nice article. Wanted to see if Mobile Health was available for local Black Barbershop Initiative. We need to get involved in promote healthy living in Black Men. Junetenth, Westside Reunion would be ideally event to host Healthy Living Initiative. o Mr. Norvell stated for a long time Black Men didn’t know what PSA was. Black Men The number one cancer for African-American males is lung cancer The second is prostate cancer o Commissioner Williams requested 200 for Barbershop Initiative for supplies. Felice asked what supplies are needed? Williams stated table clothes, tables, cotton balls, alcohol swabs, and other things that are not supplied by the State. We do have a few tables purchased last year. All of $200 may not be used and will be returned to Commission. Motion for $200 to Black Barbershop Initiative made by Commissioner cox Seconded by Milsap I’s 10 Nay’s 0 Motion carried • African Garden o Current status of the Garden Secretary has been trying to reach Laura from Beachside Gardens who originally stated that April will be the ideal time to break ground She has not had any luck yet but it's currently working on the process .Currently trying to make a go fund me page to help sponsor the cost of the gardens.The GoFundMe cannot be processed through the city account which has control over our funding it would need to be through a personal or another account because the city cannot determine how that money came in President pain has been trying to reach out to the bank to see what other options are available. African Brother • Are African brother is in Georgia more specifically Newnan Georgia Secretary Troutman has reached out to her family to see if they would be willing to extend Open Arms to our African brother. He will be in Newnan Georgia until July Roundtable • Commissioner Corely o I will not be attending the monthly meeting of the Michigan City Commission on the Social Status of African-American Males due to work related training. I have attached the April 2019 Tresaurer’s report and a funding request. Also, I have attached the information and application for the Michigan City Police Department 2019 Youth Leadership Academy for commissioners information and to pass out to qualifying students (6th, 7th and 8th grade for the 2019-2020 school year). If there are any questions or concerns then please feel free to contact me. • Commissioner Milsap o Met with Marie Thomas of work one which is not being utilized as it should be in such a valuable resource within a community Goodwill was just awarded Monies For all of their locations Lake County Porter County Stark County Jasper County Newton County What program will be ran through WorkOneOffice located on 8th and Wabash please call 219-462-2940 the program is designed Former inmates looking to re-enter the workforce. o Next is the fourth annual community job fair Held at Blue Chip on April 18th 2019 from 1 or 4 p.m. and the third document is a list of available jobs for anyone looking for employment • Commissioner Caroll o The Michigan City Human Rights Commission is Celebrating their Autism Awareness Month With a free autism Forum held on Thursday April 18th 2019 From 5:30 to 7:30 at the Living Way Church at 2410 Duneland Beach Drive experts will uncover the mystery of autism.The Autism Society of Indiana with the Elena Magnus. The Bureau of Developmental Disability ServicesWill be speaking about Medicaid waiver assistance, Social Security insurance Including disability insuranceSSIParents like a support group . o Also the Michigan City Human Rights Commission will be celebrating the community of Michigan City hosting a The 2019 annual Humanitarian of the year Luncheon The Mediterranean of the year will be presented to a citizen of Michigan City .The Hawkins Williams Scholarship and Judy Schuman Memorial Scholarship will also be presented as well. The unsung hero will be presented as well on April 26th, at Kreguer Memorial Hall from 1130 to1 tickets must be purchased in advance at city hall. o Thanks to the NAACP for the Trailblazers event and all commissions and public that attended the event. • Commissioner Norvell o Spoke with Assistant Chief Royce Williams and Chief Swiztek about increased unwelcome activity in the certain communities.. When a vehicle is stopped the majority has a gun.Most have permits. Police are aware of the situation. We are trying to keep the death toll down. • Commissioner Williams  o Bowling for Bros o 30 people attend the event. After payment to City Lanes we have a balance of $411 asking commissioners to pay the $60 for the 4 tickets they received. Commissioner Tillman attend the event. Goal of the event via Marty Corey was $2000. o MAy 30th at Pleasant Hill will host a Mental Health Fair. With Healthlink, IBE, Covering Kids and Families , Rev Lang will allow hosting with open Soup Kitchen. Guest Speakers and vendors needed. Mental health is serious people need to know where to go for help. Mental health is a stigma. 777 East 10th Street. • Commissioner Tillman o Proposing to reenter 5 Barbershops used in Black Barbershop Initiative. to discuss Child Support. To combat misled information. o Primary Elections are coming up. AFrican American Males that are no longer incarcerated, on probation,or parole, home detention you have the right to vote. April 9th Early voting began at the Michigan City Courthouse M-F 8-4 pm. April 27th from 8-3 pm, Saturday May 4th from 8-3 pm Monday 8-12 noon. Election Day will be on May 7th. ID is needed to vote. If you don’t have one. The License branch will provide an ID free of charge. • Commissioner Cox o Seeking Connects with union for training programs. Academically Culturally Technologically Scientific Olympics Program. ACT SO is A scholarship opportunity that is held at the NAACP Nationals this year in Detroit the third week of July we had about 30 students who were interested in joining the axle program but unfortunately we had no mentors we are seeking mentors to help our students throughout the all year long axle program to help them achieve academic success if you are interested in mentoring children as a part of our ACTSO program please contact me. • Carl Ridle o Pathways to Affordable Housing to address housing needs April 25th from 9-4. Climate in housing is changing in Michigan City.
