VI. Sub-Committee Assignments: Reports
A. Education - Commissioner McCormick Gave an Open invitation for all Commissioners to join subcommittees, meeting
Pastor D. Hurt: Michigan City Area Schools, (*the Council filled vacant seat), Mr. Cox joined subcommittee
Finalizing Field Trip. Black Community members need to attend School Board meetings and run for School board when seats are
open. We need to be a willing participant.
Discussion:
Commissioner Milsap: is there a grievance procedure
Commissioner Moore : There is , but is confusing .We need people to run and .parental involvement lacking – gave community
example of Parent not knowing that their child had 4 points.
Commissioner McCormick: grievance process has no teeth, so we need to combat this problem.
Commissioner Fly : gave examples from youth who utilize his nonprofit “Fly High Youth” who were kicked out of school and who
now attend AK Smith.
Commissioner Cox: often times when kids are get expelled at the beginning of the year ,the administrator often is thinking
about what that kid did last year, or worst than that the family is being judged by siblings who may have been troublemakers.
Commissioner Lee: Mr. McCormick can you submit field trip information
Commissioner McCormick: not finalized yet
B. Health: Commissioner Lee: Health Subcommittee Report attached
Discussion
C. Employment – Commissioner Milsap: Zero attendance at this Training Program ( Flyer attached) we will regroup and try again
in the Spring

Discussion on advertising locations and age groups for program: Commissioner Fly
Commissioner Johnson: advertising in the school system
Commissioner McCormick : I dropped the ball; I will post on Facebook : Mr. Hogan people need to see your program. It was
amazing how we can come together as men and see how we can change each other’s attitudes about one another, and I
appreciate you.
Commissioner Fly: They need money now.

Thank you for your continued support and prayers for our entire
community. The Michigan City Black Business Association would like to
partner with you in a community wide Kwanzaa Celebration from
December 26, 2022, to January 1, 2023.
Kwanzaa is a time of learning, family, and celebration. The 7 principles of Kwanzaa will be demonstrated
by African American organizations such as the NAACP, Mindful Minds,
Indiana Black Expo of Greater Michigan City, The Drifters, Essence Rare, The
Michigan City Black History Committee and selected Ministers of the
Michigan City Ministerial Conference.
We will have vendors, Community resources (such as Health Screenings), arts & crafts for children, and
refreshments. For the culmination, which is Sunday January 1, we are planning an old school church
service, with traditional gospel singing by Michigan City Community Choir.
Our goal is to bring our community together by offering this entire week-long celebration at a minimum
admission cost or free. Generous sponsorships will enable this seven-day celebration to be free for all to
attend. We hope you see the need for this activity and become a sponsor.
The tentative agenda includes Community Prayer; Singing “Lift Every Voice and Sing” the Black National
Anthem and each night themed with the Introduction of Kwanzaa Principles
1.) Umoja (Unity) To strive for and maintain unity in the family, community, nation and race.
2.) Kujichagulia (Self Determination) To define Ourselves, name Ourselves, create for Ourselves and
speak for Ourselves.
3.) Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility To build and maintain our community together and
make our community’s problems our problems and to solve them together.
4.) Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics) To build and maintain our stores, shops and other businesses
and to profit from them together.
5.) Nia (purpose) To make our collective vocation the building and developing of our community in
order to restore our people to their traditional greatness.
6.) Kuumba (Creativity) To do always as much as we can to leave our community more beautiful
than we inherited it.
7.) Imani (Faith) To believe with all our hearts in our people and the righteousness and victory of
our struggle.
Come on aboard and be part of this history making event for the entire City.
