Michigan City Police Civil Service Commission Meeting Minutes: April 8, 2015
Commissioner Pliske called the meeting to order at 11:00 a.m. A quorum was noted with Commissioners John
Pliske, Michael Buda and Dennis Pickens in attendance, Also present was Police Chief Mark Swistek,
Assistant Police Chief Tim Richardson, Assistant Police Chief Royce Williams, Commission Attorney Jennifer
Koethe and Councilman Pat Boy.
Commissioner Pickens made a motion to accept the minutes from the April 8, 2015 meeting. Commissioner
Buda 2nd. Ayes 3 Nays 0; Motion Carries.
Probationary Officer Report- The 3 officers are working under Officer Alt as their Supervisor. All 3 are
doing well.
Awards- Officer Michael Oberle received a Letter of Accommodation for an incident that occurred on
December 30, 2014.
Officer Michael Oberle also received the 2014 Chris Smith Award.
Lt. Tim Richardson received a Letter of Accommodation for an incident that occurred on February 5, 2015.
Officers not able to attend the meeting but received awards were:
Officer Bret Darrell received a Letter of Accommodation for an incident that occurred on February 27, 2015.
Officer Kelly Williams received a Letter of Accommodation for an incident that occurred on February 5, 2015.
Officer Larry Young Sr. received a Letter of Accommodation for an incident that occurred on February 5, 2015.
Officer Jason Cracknell received a Letter of Accommodation for an incident that occurred on February 5, 2015.
Cpl. Greg Miller received a Letter of Accommodation for an incident that occurred on February 5, 2015.
Office Nick Kobitka received a Letter of Accommodation for an incident that occurred on December 15, 2014.
Commissioner Pliske thanked all the officers that received these awards for their hard work.
Commissioner Buda thanked them as well and added how he feels a lot safer.
Commissioner Pickens congratulated the officers.
Report from Chief Swistek- The Police Memorial will be on Friday May 15.
Also thanked all the local businesses for the donations for the Annual Easter Egg Hunt.
Commission Comments- Officer Dave Legros has retired after 25 years.
Commissioner Buda wanted to make sure that that the commission could use the new drug screen policy
starting with the interviews that were going to be held on April 11. The commission attorney said yes, that the
consent forms could be signed at that time and if the commission wanted to send the applicant for drug testing
on Sunday or Monday they could. Assistant Police Chief Tim Richardson wanted to know if the consent form
stated anything that said if they fail or refuse to take the test, would that eliminate them from the hiring process.
The commission attorney said no it didn’t but it could always be updated. Commission Pickens made a motion
to change the consent form to state this and commissioner Buda 2nd. 3 Ayes 0 Nays; Motion Carries.
Commissioner Pickens made a motion to adjourn and Commissioner Buda 2nd. 3 Ayes 0 Nays; Motion
Carries.
Next meeting will be Wednesday June 10, 2015 at 11:00 AM.
