Michigan City Fire Merit Commission Meeting Minutes: May 4, 2015
President Mock called the meeting to order at 5:00 p.m. A quorum was noted with
Commissioners Louise Mock, Charles Williams, Robert Pollock, Geoff Plummer and David
Gring in attendance. Also present were Fire Chief Ronnie Martin, Commission Attorney
Jennifer Koethe and City Council President Chris Schwanke.
At this time, President Mock asked all present to stand and recite the Pledge of
Allegiance.
A motion was made by Commissioner Pollock to accept the minutes from the April 6,
2015 meeting with one correction of the cost of the fire training facility being $226,000
not $22,600. Commissioner Gring 2nd. Roll Call was done with 5 ayes 0 Nays, All
Approved.
Commissioner Pollock made a motion to accept the minutes from the April 20, 2015
meeting and Commissioner Plummer 2nd. Roll Call was done with 5 ayes 0 Nays, All
Approved.
Communications/Claims-
Payroll for the month of May 2015 was $926.67 plus $500.00 for attorney fees.
Commissioner Pollock made a motion to accept the payroll and Commissioner Plummer
2nd. Roll Call was done with 5 Ayes 0 Nays, All Approved.
Commissioner Pollock stated that as of April 30. 2015 we had used 20.28% of our
budget. That we were right on track. However, he was still worried about the
upcoming applicant testing in August and what the cost would be for AKS if the training
center on Michigan Blvd. would not hold the applicants to test. Commissioner Pollock
asked how many the facility could hold and Chief Martin answered 99.
Report from City Council President Chris Schwanke- Thanked commissioner
attorney Jennifer Koethe for the meeting that was held to work on the ordinance and
the positive changes.
Report from Commission Attorney Jennifer Koethe- She thought that the
meeting went very well. It was a good start with good results and was very productive.
Report from Union Local 475- No Report

Old Business- No Report
Report from Chief Martin- There are rumors that South Bend will be having another
academy. The cost will be $3,000 per recruit. But that it was the commissions
responsibility to decide where to send the recruits.
The meeting went well, and that Attorney Jennifer Koethe underestimates herself.
Thanked Commissioners Williams and Pollock for their help at New Hope Church for the
open house promoting the Fire Science.
He was waiting for the 3 recruits names, that he had “ghost” appointments made up for
PERF.
Public Comment- No Report
Commission Comment- Commissioner Gring asked if the people that were on the
current hiring list that is going to expire December 31, 2015, could they retest come
August. The attorney answered that they do not have to wait.
Motion to adjourn was made by Commission Pollock and 2nd by
Commissioner Gring Ayes 5; Nays 0 motion carries.
Next meeting is scheduled for Monday June 1, 2015 at 5:00 pm.
