Minutes Michigan City Public Art Committee Zoom Meeting April 21, 2022 10:00 am Call to Order: Janet Bloch Attendees: Shannon Eason, Jane Daley, Dale Cooper, Judy Jacobi, Janet Bloch, Kathy Dennis, John Ryszka, Matt Kubik, Don Przybylinski, Guests: Skyler York, Aaron Borngraber Minutes: Minutes from the March meeting were reviewed. Motion It was moved (Cooper) and seconded (Przybylinski) to accept the minutes. The motion Financial Report: The financial report for March was reviewed: The operating fund has a balance of $20,083.00. The non-reverting donation fund has a balance of $2,717.13. Motion It was moved (Cooper) and seconded (Kubik) to accept the financial reports as presented. The motion carried unanimously. Public Comment: There was no public comment Old Business: • Kiosk in Westcott Park - Subcommittee: Dale Cooper, John Ryszka and Matt Kubik No Report  Report concerning 2% for art from Redevelopment – Subcommittee-Matt Kubik, CarolAnn Brown, Robin Kohn, Shannon Eason, Judy Jacobi, Janet Bloch, Don Przybylinski Mr. Borngraber said that he hasn't had time to work on this project. Ms. Bloch did some research and sent her findings to Mr. Borgraber  Adding a Public Art Element to Observation Deck - Subcommittee Eason, Daley, Dennis On going  Otocast Mr. Ryszka reported that he will prepare a spread sheet with existing public art that Ms. Jacobi suggested. Also, he will get pricing for new signage and he will contact Eric at Otocast for costs to add new art.  Murals for Canada Park– Subcommittee: Dale Cooper, John Ryszka, Shannon Eason, Janet Bloch, Matt Kubik on going  Repaint Dasein, Waiting for warm weather  Fund Raisers No fund raisers planned New Business  Native American Project - Subcommittee – CarolAnn Brown, Kathy Dennis, Jane Daley Ms. Dennis reported that the program for the unveiling of the turtle sculpture will be as follows: The program will take place on the front lawn of the City Library on Friday, May6th at 4:30 pm to unveil a new sculpture by award winning Anishinaabe artist, Jason Quigno. The piece a turtle, Mikinaak, will later be installed in front of City Hall. Dancers and the big drum from the Pokagon Band along with master storyteller, Jefferson Ballew will entertain the group. Participants will also learn of the crucial role Native Americans played in the founding of Michigan City and surrounding areas. The turtle, or Grandmother Earth, represents wisdom, healing, health, and protection to Native Americans. The sculpture and a historic plaque will honor and recognize the importance of our Native American heritage and after the ceremony the turtle will find a permanent home in front of City Hall. Weather permitting, the event will be outside so feel free to stand, or bring a blanket or lawn chair to enjoy the presentation. In case of rain, the celebration will move to inside of the Library at 100 E 4th Street, Michigan City. The agenda is as follows: Open 10 min drummers & dancers Introduction 5 min Robin Kohn, welcome people and introduce Mayor Welcome Mayor Parry, welcome community, Pokagon band & thank Horizon Bank for their support of the project. Significance Don Przybylinski & Robin Kohn, talk about significance of piece to community and introduce Jefferson Ballew. Dancers Jefferson Ballew introduction, 15 min Wrap up Robin Kohn, Thank you  Sculptfusion Mr. Kubik has several suggestions concerning the placement of new sculptures and moving of existing pieces as follows: Move Crystal Effect from 9th & Franklin to SW Corner of Ohio & Ann Street Move Owl & Pussycat from Westcott Park to NW corner Franklin & 9th Move Dasein from City Hall to SE Corner of Ripley & Franklin Move Clarivoiance From US 12 & Michigan Blvd to SW corner 5th & Franklin Place Chicago Peace Tree SE Corner 5th & Franklin Place Lady With a Hat NE Corner of 7th & Franklin Place Hamilton SE corner Coolspring & Franklin Motion It was moved (Daley) and seconded (Przybylinski) accept Mr. Kubik's proposal for new sites. The motion carried unanimously. The placement of Clarivoiance will be decided at the May meeting.  Committee Reports No reports  Art Projects: No requests  Children’s Art Scholarship Requests: Two requests were received at he CVB for art classes at the Lubeznik Center. Motion It was moved (Kubik) and seconded (Dennis) accept the two request for Children's Art Scholoarships. The motion carried unanimously.  PR Committee: - Subcommittee Janet Bloch, CarolAnn Brown, Jane Daley, Judy Jacobi Ms. Dennis wrote a press release  Michigan City Mainstreet Association  Comments Adjournment: 11:25 am The next meeting will be in the Mayors Conference Room at City Hall on May 19th starting at 10 am.
