Minutes Michigan City Public Art Committee Mayor's Conference Room City Hall Michigan City May 18, 2023 10:00 am  Call to Order: Robin Kohn at 10:05 am Attendees: Kathy Dennis, Jane Daley, Shannon Eason, CarolAnn Brown, Robin Kohn, Judy Jacobi, Matt Kubik  Minutes: Minutes from the regular April meeting were reviewed Motion It was moved (Dennis) and seconded (Cooper) to accept the minutes. The motion carried unanimously.  Financial Report: The financial report for April was reviewed: There was $17,914.24 in the operating fund. The gifts & donations fund has a balance of $16.63. Motion It was moved (Daley) and seconded (Cooper) to accept the financial reports as presented. The motion carried unanimously.  Public Comment: No Comment  Old Business: 1. Kiosk in Westcott Park - Subcommittee: Dale Cooper, John Ryszka and Matt Kubik Ms. Cooper reported that the new posters are installed and the announcement was made on our Facebook page. 2. Report concerning a percentage for art from Redevelopment – Subcommittee-Judy Jacobi (chairperson) Matt Kubik, CarolAnn Brown, Robin Kohn, Shannon Eason, Janet Bloch, Don Przybylinski, Kathy Dennis Ms. Dennis and Ms. Eason meet with Skyler York, director of the planning department to discuss the ordinance draft. The concenses was to present the draft ordinance to the City Council asking for 1.5% of the private permit fees. 3. Fund Raisers (including Beaux Ball) – Subcommittee: Entire Committee Members of the entire committee will approach the following businesses for give- backs. Kabelins, Swingbellys, Emita II, Leeds, Barker Pub. 4. Adding a Public Art Element to Observation Deck - Subcommittee Eaton, Daley, Dennis Ms. Eason reported that none of the entities involved want to take ownership of the project  New Business: 1. Adding private art to Otocast – Subcommittee John Ryszka, Shannon Eason, Janet Bloch Everyone on the committee is asked to seek out businesses that have art, murals, sculpture and determine what interest they have in getting involved in Otocast. If these businesses are interested their contact information will be given to Eric at Otocast, so that he may call on them to become part of the Michigan City tour. Mr. Ryszka will be asked to share the list of private businesses that have art. 2. Moving “You are Beautiful” There was a request to re-do this motion from our February 16 th meeting at our May 18th meeting. The February 16 motion was as follows: Motion It was moved (Dennis) and seconded (Kubik) to install You are Beautiful across from the Skate Park on Highway 12. The motion carried unanimously. The new motion on May 18 was as follows Motion It was moved (Kubik) and seconded (Eason) to choose the north side our route 12 with the exact location to be decided. The motion carried unanimously. 3. Installation of Dasein, Clairvoyance, Peace Tree, Owl & Pussy Cat and painting Dasein. Dasein will be installed on the corner of Ohio and Ann Streets, Clairvoyance installed at Horizon Bank and Peace Tree installed on the SE corner of Wabash and 5 Street and Owl & Pussy Cat will be moved to the SE Corner of Coolspring Avenue and Franklin Street. 4.Ram sculpture The committee agreed that the sculpture should be in Washington Park. Motion It was moved (Eason) and seconded (Brown) to place the Ram sculpture across from the zoo in front of the pine trees pending Park Board approval. The motion carried unanimously. A naming of the Ram contest will be presented on the MAC Facebook page. The contestants will be narrowed down to 10, then MAC will choose final 3 who will be invited to the Sculptfusion Artist Recognition party on August 2 nd and the final winner will be announced. The prize will be tickets for Emita II which Ms. Eason will secure. 5. Moving American Gothic – Mr. Kubik will research On going 6. Sculptfusion 2023 Ms. Brown presented photos of some new pieces that would be available for lease. Mr Kubik will research Beacon for sites and email that report to the committee. Motion It was moved (Eason) and seconded (Cooper) to accept Lisa Little's “Moon” pieces for later 2023-2024.The motion carried unanimously. 7. Sculptfusion Kick off Event- Subcommittee: Dennis, Cooper, Daley, Brown The committee will meet with Leed's Public House soon to see if they are interested in hosting the event on August 2 nd. 8. Neighborhood Art Committee/Murals for Canada Park– Subcommittee: Dale Cooper, John Ryszka, Shannon Eason, Janet Bloch, Matt Kubik, Kathy Dennis, CarolAnn Brown Ms. Eason reported that painting of the mural in Canada Park will begin on June 6th.  Committee Reports: No reports 1. Art Projects: No Report 2. Children’s Art Scholarship Requests: subcommittee Janet Bloch, CarolAnn Brown, Jane Daley, Judy Jacobi There were several requests submitted from the following: Aiden Taylor, Neyla Taylor, Mya Taylor, Nathan Taylor Motion: It was moved (Eason) and seconded (Kubik) to accept all of the application for Children's Art that were submitted. The motion carried unanimously. 3. PR, Marketing, Press releases - Subcommittee: Bloch, Cooper, Jacobi, Daley A press release will be submitted as soon as the sculpture's are installed and an announcement will be made concerning 2023 Sculptfusion. Ms. Cooper invited MAC to send recordings to ALCO, Andrew White for inclusion in the weekly broadcasts. 4. Other MC Commissions/Committee Reports Pertinent to MAC No report  Announcements: The Lubeznik Center for the Arts will be hosting their Art Bash on June 24 and there is an opportunity to advertise in their program book. Motion: It was moved (Daley) and seconded (Cooper ) to purchase a $100 color ad in the Lubeznik Gala program book. The motion carried unanimously.  Adjournment: The meeting adjourned at 11:45 am  Next Meeting The next meeting will be in the Mayors Conference Room at City Hall on June 15, 2023 starting at 10 am.
