Friday May 12, 2025 Anti-racism Taskforce Regular Schedule meeting.
The Anti-Racism Task Force meeting addressed scholarship updates, upcoming ceremonies,
labor equity workshops, community engagement, and strategies for improving communication
and support for diverse student populations.
The meeting focused on updates regarding scholarships and upcoming ceremonies for
recipients. Two scholarship ceremonies are scheduled: Middletown Public High School will be
on May 30 and Vinal will be on June 10, with attendance encouraged.
The Task Force deliberated on the necessity of providing equitable access to scholarships for
every student in Middletown. The members highlighted any significance of engaging with
private schools to raise awareness about scholarship opportunities. The group contemplated
collaborating with local organizations to enhance educational initiatives and facilitate college
tours (HBCU). Additionally, there is a need to enhance communication strategies to ensure that
all high school students are informed about the scholarships available to them.
The Labor Equity Workgroup is creating a plan to host a workshop on labor equity which will be
held at the Russell Library, covering interview skills and resume writing. It will be a part of the
Wednesday summer tabling at the Russell Library. More information to come.
Task Force member Pat discussed the need for increased membership commitment to achieve
quorum in future meetings. Suggestions from the members to think about involving high school
students in the Task Force for diverse perspectives.
The Task Force establishes an anti-racism email and website to enhance communication and
outreach efforts: ARTF@middletownct.gov
The group discusses the importance of setting realistic hiring goals that reflect community
diversity. Maria will follow up with the Labor equity workgroup with more information.
Members express concern over funding cuts and stress the need for independent financial
support for the Task Force. Task Force's effectiveness relies on community engagement and
citizen connection in Middletown.
The Roll The Dice Work Shop -A focus group workshop will occur in October, promoting
dialogue on anti-racism and community safety.
Action items
Maria will send out the award letters and checks to the scholarship recipients.
The Task Force members were encouraged to participants are encouraged to confirm their
attendance for the ceremonies on May 30 and June 10
