Minutes of the Meeting Public Art Committee Middletown Commission on the Arts Thursday, May 20, 2021 2 p.m. Municipal Building MCA Public Art Committee (Present: Charlotte McCoid, Joyce Kirkpatrick, David Bauer) Notes by Joyce Kirkpatrick 1. Call to order 2:00 p.m. 2. Public session - none 3. Old business a. Risley Sculptures Wooden Sculpture “Untitled” - Richard Bergan has taken it to his workshop and is making the needed repairs. Bench and Two Screens – “Dance in the Forest” (bench) and “For the Birds” (two screens). Charlotte will follow up on suggestions. Specs for the welding job were formulated: - Check all welds - Re-weld those that need to be done, using cold steel welding - Re-weld missing brace on the left figure’s skirt (Bench) - Adjust and align screens so welds can be done - Paint the 3 pieces with rust-resistant, black matte spray paint - Apply bronze paint as done by the artist on the 2 Screens only. - Transport with care and wrap the 3 sculptures to avoid further damage Placement for the Bench and Screens was also discussed. Safe, public locations are needed for all the Risley sculptures. In the case of the Bench and Screens, the background should be plain and not dark, so that the design can be seen. b. Planning for City Art Collection curation - Placement of the Risley Sculptures would be something a curator might be asked about. Specs for Curator(s): David Bauer will draft a list of specs to be sent to Joyce and Charlotte – hopefully before the MCA May meeting. c. % for Art status - This seems to be moving along – Language to include the Arts in all Building Projects remains in the Charter. Such language is also included in the Bonding. Municipal Building move to Main Street – Kisha will be asked to update where that stands. 4. New Business - none 5. Any further business -none 6.
