Public Safety Commission FIRE DEPARTMENT December 16, 2024 **Hybrid City Hall – Room 208 -----------Meeting Minutes---------- 1. CALL TO ORDER Commissioner Ford called the meeting to order at 6:35 p.m. 2. ATTENDANCE MEMBERS PRESENT: Commissioner Darnell Ford Commissioner Anthony Mangiafico Commissioner Tony Gennaro Commissioner Linda Salafia Commissioner Kelly Sweeney MEMBERS ABSENT: STAFF PRESENT: Fire Chief Dave Albert Police Chief Erik Costa 3. MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETING Commissioner Ford made a motion to approve the minutes from November 18, 2024, Commissioner Mangiafico seconded, and all voted to accept the minutes as presented. 4. PUBLIC HEARING 5. CORRESPONDENCE  None 6. MONTHLY REPORT  Chief Albert gave the monthly report: o 351 emergency calls for the month o Fire duty was up:  Bernie O’Rourke Drive fire  Assisted in Cromwell for a fire  Fire in Portland  Station coverage provided in Southington for a 3rd alarm fire  Coverage done in Middlefield while they handled a fire Page 1 of 3   Assisted with a few other mutual aid incidents in South Fire & in Westfield o Events:  Attended all required monthly meetings  Additional meetings were held for the Newfield Street property purchase  Every Tuesday meetings are held regarding the HQ renovation construction  Met with EDC – Cross Street station needs discussed  Engine 3 meeting held with Smeal representative to go over specs & finalize  Command Staff meeting held  Lieutenant & Battalion Chief written tests held last week  Oral board to be held in roughly two weeks  Captain Oral boards will be held in about three weeks  Newly added position in contract  HR posted the open Deputy Chief position o Training:  Vacant house on Grand Street used for training  Last week MFD hosted a Confined Space class with the Ct. Fire Academy  12 members of the department got certified as Confined Space Technicians  Public Education events held  Company training done  CIRMA doing a defensive driving course 7. OLD BUSINESS o Overtime  Fill overtime picked up last month  12 week FMLA returning this week  (1) long term light duty for 2-3 months  Military deployment coming up in March for about 6 months o Apparatus updates:  New Engine 3  Almost done with specs – fine tuning body style to match rest of apparatus  Old Engine 3  Has been at Cummins for the last two & a half months for repairs  Came back on Friday afternoon and by Monday it was back out of service & towed back to Cummins o Chief is going to talk with the apparatus manufacturer about what kind of recourse we may have o Truck 1  Broke down Friday night (quick cool radiator line issue) but is currently back in service o HQ Renovations update:  Coming along – ahead of schedule  Hoping to have all work completed by mid-January  Administration side of building getting renovations (flooring/paint) as there is enough money left due to the competitive bidding & price o Training Building:  All forms submitted to the state for ARPA - $375,000.00 Public Safety Meeting – December 16, 2024 minutes Page 2 of 3  o Newfield Street property:  Closing is this Friday  Contract in place for property structure demo  Structure to be used for training before demo & Chief will open it up to other departments for training before it is demolished including the police department o Assistance to Firefighters Grant:  Grant being submitted this week  Funds will be used to cover all expenses for vehicle extrication class for the entire department – grant total $250,000.00 o City Wide EMS:  870 EMS calls with three mutual aid ambulances 8. NEW BUSINESS o 125th Anniversary o This month marks the 125th anniversary of fire headquarters  The anniversary coincides with the building renovations  Ribbon cutting ceremony to be held and all will be invited – more details to come 9. Other Matters Not on the Agenda: o Commissioner Ford asked about the mutual aid to Southington o Chief Albert stated that the mutual aid agreement was set up with the previous administration and further stated that he is going to re-evaluate the agreement 10. Public Hearing Reopened – Other Matters 11. Monthly Summary of Action Taken by the Telecommunications Committee o Currently staffed at sixteen with two in training & in process for starting new hire for certified dispatcher o Monthly call stats consist of 6,456 incidents, 2,150 9-1-1 calls, and 7,504 administrative calls 12.
