SEPTEMBER 20, 2018 MEETING 6:00 P.M.

RECREATION & COMMUNITY SERVICES COMMISSION –
In attendance: Mary Bartolotta, Ed Dypa, Lincoln Everest, Matt Fraulino, Anthony Jaskot,
Phil Pessina
Absent: Lucy Bettencourt, Akbar Coffy, Mitchell Motlaugh, Salvatore Uccello
Staff: Cathy Lechowicz, Director
AGENDA:
Call Meeting to Order: Meeting called to order at 6:17pm. There was a serious accident on
Rte. 9 that delayed Commission Members.
Approval of the Minutes: Phil Pessina made a motion to approve the minutes; seconded by
Mary Bartolotta.
Public Hearing: no additional members of the public in attendance
Department Reports:
Building Updates
The director gave a list of what issues that need to be addressed:
Northeast corner of building – dig out around foundation, seal outside and inside
to prevent future water, waiting for work to start
North side of building – Remove brick and pave north side of parking lot
HVAC – being assessed, significant issues, poor cooling, poor warming
Program Updates
Senior Center is in demand.
Rec Dept is gearing up for Fall Festival October 20th
Summer camp - 600 unique campers, No major incidents, slightly lower numbers
Bingo is happening this Friday night
Brochures went out for both Senior and Rec. Departments.
Palmer Field opened – Fall programming - Pickle Ball, Senior Walking, Tennis.
Holiday on Main Planning
Breakfast with Santa – Phil thought Dec. 1st
NEW BUSINESS:
Middle School Annex
Maintain annex portion of WWMS – pool, gym, café, locker rooms
Could also host large Senior events
Could hold Summer programs the weeks that schools are preparing to open
Would also be an emergency shelter for this side of town
Aquatics
CT Rec & Park Assoc. meeting
Thinking of Vets pool usage with Cathy, Bill Russo & Chris Holden
Cathy would like to do an Aquatics Audit – Staffing, Resources, Safety
Ice Skating Rink
Placement of Rink – It was decided to be at Harbor Park again this year
700 Unique users last year over 2 month span of Feb. – Apr.
More friction on surface than traditional ice, will wear in with use
First year with Holiday on Main – Open on Friday after Thanksgiving
Need to purchase nets if using for hockey
