Middletown Resource Recycling Advisory Commission Regular Meeting June 25, 2018 Members present: Alison Johnson, Darrell Gagnon, Izzy Guy, Robin Hansen, Krishna Winston. Members not present: Bessie Bianco, Rebecca MacLachlan, Monica Belyea, Harold Panciera, Christine Sherwood, Debbie Stanley. Others Present: Kim O’Rourke, Recycling Coordinator, Kristen Brown, Waste Zero, Barbara Heineken via phone. The meeting was called to order at 7:00. The minutes were approved with one correction. Ms. Winston introduced Barbara Heineken of the Carton Council. Barbara presented a very interesting powerpoint on carton recycling – how cartons got recycled, where are the markets, how much is recycled nationally and what is happening in Middletown. Next, Kristen Brown offered her presentation on her work in analyzing Middletown’s solid waste data and offering a different option to help reduce the City’s waste. She said the single most effective way to reduce waste is through a SMART program (Save Money and Reduce Trash). She gave examples of how it could work in Middletown. Currently the City generates about 800lbs/capita/year. She felt with a SMART program this could be reduced to 400 lbs/capita/year.
