6:00 PM
Meeting Notes
Attending: Seb Giulliano, Michael Awdziewicz, Melinda Brainerd, Brian
Farrell, Bill Porter
Staff: Justin Carbonella, coordinator; Katie Kesten, admin.
YIG: Jewel Lucien, Aidan McMillan, Dermot McMillan, Nora Smith
A. Call to Order – Justin Carbonella called the meeting to order @
6:08 p.m. and declared that we did not meet quorum.
B. Approval Meeting Minutes / Notes
Held for quorum.
C. YSBAB Recruitment Discussion – Justin shared with the Board the
Youth Services Advisory Board (YSBAB) current roster and mandated
requirements dictated by the City’s Charter. The Board discussed that
the constraints of the Charter may need to be altered to allow for more
flexibility for joining YSBAB members. Seb Giuliano mentioned that we
should wait until after the December Common Council meeting to bring
to the Council as the existing Common Council will not want to make
any changes before the newest members are in place after the
November 5, 2019 election.
D. Review and Feedback of MYSB Draft Community Information
Sheets– Justin shared with the Board the draft versions of the MYSB
Community Information Sheets (English and Spanish versions)
explaining that these will be primarily in the hands of Middletown
Police Officers to be used when on calls involving youth and families
that need additional supports. Bill Porter shared with the Board the
two information sheets that the MPD are currently using and explained
that these were the genesis for the creation of the MYSB Community
Information Sheets. The size of the MYSB Information Sheet will be
pocket sized, like the examples Bill shared, to allow for MPD ease in
use. Some of the language used on the draft sheet was discussed and
suggestions made to soften it or to make it clearer. It was also
suggested that Vaping Issues be added to the list of things YSB is here
to help with. Also adding a brief description and/or mission statement
of the MYSB will help families understand our role in the community.
The Spanish version needs to be checked for language and continuity.
E. Updates & Announcements
a. Circles at MHS – Justin shared with the Board that MYSB has held
several successful restorative circles at MHS recently. One was for a
student returning from a 5 day out of school suspension to assist in
his reintegration and the other was with a student and teacher that
had an altercation. Both were successful.
The meeting was adjourned at 6:46 p.m.
